I brush them on in painter. I use a camelhair brush variant (essentially like a regular round paintbrush), and just use various levels of transparency etc. I might do a tutorial if I get around to it. I have 27 saved steps along the way.

yes, you can get tablets from 80-100 bucks for the small ones, usaully 4x5. Wacom is the industry leader. There are a couple other players out there, and some might be good, but personally I am not sure I would take my chances with them.

maya makes a free learning edition you could try out.

I might eventually. I adjusted it a bit...edges are still a bit off, but good enough for now.

Nice work there Keiphus. Those glasses were the most impressive to me. Modeling that many types would be tough. Lot's of nuances. The NIC is also impressive to me.

Painter 7 no referencee, opaque brush

Great work you are doing. I saw the finished one of the wip here and I particularly was impressed that you could jam a cat in that little space!

Argh, I don't seem to be able to keep them under an hour! bout an hour and a half here, all corel photopaint. Reference on the flower, none on the rest.

The white portion is certainly painting. You might try a manual gradient next time though just for the practice! Kind of an alien in a pool theme there huh? What painter version?

The free first version is not high powered, but it is great for two features. First, it can do event files. It allows you to save a file that you can then send to someone and they can see your work in low or high speed from the first. Very helpful for learning. There are tons of event files out there to learn from. Second, it can do networked painting. You can connect to someone and paint on the same canvass for fun speed events, etc. The watercolor tools in it are widely regarded as best, though the pencil tool is good for quick sketches. Later versions have more features, but the free one is great for social painting :)

You can certainly learn to do it. how quickly depends on how much of a start you already have, how much talent, etc. But most people can learn to draw to a decent level. The key factor is whether you want it enough to work at it. A few steps. 1. work on your traditional drawing. There is nothing magical about the computer that allows someone who can't draw to suddenly draw. If anything the computer might be a little more difficult to draw on, but makes up for it in its ability to undo mistakes. here are some drawing lessons I worked up for folks on the board here. They are quite basic, but in working with people locally they did help them to progress. http://rs_vultures.tripod.com/drawclassosesion1.pdf they are in pdf format, so you can print it out and draw right on the lessons. 2. If you already have drawing skills, or once you develop them, you will be best served by getting a graphics tablet. There are some folks who can draw quite well with a mouse, but they are rare. Show us what you can do in an hour or less. All your own work, traditional or digital is fine. I have been taking a break from painting, but just did a couple of speed paints to get back in the routine. One was about 40 minutes, the dino went beyond a speed paint to a bit over an hour. I may still put a whole background on that one. No reference for the cat, a cheap rubber toy reference for the dino.

Oh, I pop in now and again. I had been doing some other things lately. As to personal reviews...it's main feature is the texture it gives to the medium. Painter can do that too, and is more polished overall, but I think this is a pretty good program. And painter gets needlessly complex and backwards at times. This program doesn't do everything I would like, but what it does it does well, and pretty simply. And integration with ps is nice for those who use it.
