Trolling really spreads from the idea of joking around. When you put a large group of mostly testosterone filled males it's a normal social behavior. Now though, trolling has become over blown into its own issue. Normally, a joke goes too far, via peer pressure and such the behavior is rectified so that group runs fairly smoothly. On the internet where people can behind the anonymity of the worldwide web they can brush off this pressure and continue their behaviors. This is not to say some people can't take a joke or that they have no sense of humor or that the trolls are jerks. It becomes a self fulfilling prophecy of well X person is a troll and then to maintain a positive self image they make it their own, nobody wants to be hated. There's nothing really to do about it, some people will refuse to change for whatever reason. For those who can/will change appropriate and just action needs to be taken. I don't mean warn levels but a warning and explanation of what they did wrong and how to change it. There's always a line when joking and people need to learn to respect that line. The line varies from person to person but in the end, fences can always be mended if both sides are willing to listen.
