  1. Actually, it's estimated that there's around 3.0 × 10^21 planets in the known universe. That's one sextillion. http://www.mso.anu.edu.au/~charley/pape ... aver06.pdf

Again, probably for the same reasons we haven't contacted "them". Either they/we can't yet, or we/they simply don't know they/we exist. It's not as if Earth is the centerpoint of sentient life that all other planets know about and want to establish communications with. This can be solved easily by looking at how large the universe is. The universe is at least 93 billion light years in diameter, while it is around 13 billion years old. If we are near the center of the universe, then a sentient species on the edge of the universe would take 46 billion years for a message in the electro-magnetic spectrum to arrive from them. If there are 10 sentient species, arranged more or less evenly, then it would take 9.3 billion years for a message to arrive from them to any one civilization. This is ignoring the fact that at minimum, it takes two star generations to support life(a primordial star, which must then supernova to create heavier elements, and another star formed from the remnants of that star to provide heat.). We can assume that our earth(at less than 5 billion years old), is fairly typical, due to the need for these star generations. In this case, if sentient species had only begun to evolve less than 5 billion years ago, then the absolute maximum for a message from them is 5 billion light years away, or closer. Realistically, however, we have to allow for evolution and the production of sentient beings to take place, limiting it to, say, generously, 2 billion years(and two billion light years away, maximum.) Just take in the sheer size of the universe, and it's easy to tell why we haven't been contacted. It's really not a paradox at all. In fact, the N in Drake's Equation(the number of alien civilizations in the universe) would have to be more than 45, assuming the aliens reached civilization capable of contacting us exactly 2 billion years ago, and sent immediately. They would have to send these in all directions; if they instead looked around at them, they won't see us for 2 billion years(if they live on the edge of the sliver) after we send a message, then another 2 billion years to send on back. If, they evolved like us, and only developed intelligence and then developed ways of transmitting electro-magnetic radiation less than a hundred years ago, they would need to be so very very very close. If they developed it less than 100 years ago, then Drake's N value would need to be nine hundred twenty million, which is insane. Drake's equation is ultimately bs, however, because it's simply multiplying a ton of complete unknown percentages together, yielding a completely unknown answer. Out of billions and billions and billions (ad nauseum) of planets, we know of one that supports life(earth(duh)). If we divide 1/billions and billions and billions, we get nearly zero. We can then conclude that the conditions to produce life are extremely rare. This is quite a dubious claim to make, but so is the Drake equation, and really, we do not know either way. We do know of several types of systems that cannot support life. Nebulas cannot support life, nor can primordial stars, or systems very close to black holes, nor can the vast empty spaces between galaxies. We know of some types of systems similar to ours, but we do not know for sure; if the sun is a bit too hot, or the planets a bit too close, life cannot survive. If the sun is a bit too cool, or the planets a bit too far, life cannot survive.

Actually, in an unstoppable force, the particles would need to be vibrating so fast that they'd need to be moving much faster than the speed of light, which is impossible(but lets ignore that). Once they neared the speed of light, the particles would gain mass exponentially the faster they moved(relativity) Before they breached the speed of light, each particle would have so much mass that black holes would be formed. This is because by vibrating, they would gain temperature, eventually reaching the Planck Temperature.
  4. I don't know too much about homosexuality, but isn't it debated whether homosexuality is choice or genetics? I'm a christian and I've been taught that homosexuality is considered evil. But if people are born that way, isn't that a little bit unfair? The only people who ever debate that it is a choice are those with a vested interest in it being so, i.e. those who believe homosexuality is wrong and use that to justify descrimination. Psychologists are pretty much across the board convinced its not a choice. Whether its something that happens during foetal development, whether its genetics or due to factors whilst growing up is still unknown. But there are very few psychologists who have gone on record as saying it's a choice. And most of those equally have vested interests in that being the case. FREUD! Homosexuality is, at any rate, something that can be ignored. Sociopaths are born with a disposition to ignore society's laws, so is it then just that we 'discriminate' against them by locking them up? Homosexuals made a choice to follow their primal hungering, and I frown upon that. While I certainly do not think any punishment should be bestowed upon them upon this earth, I would hope that they understand that implications of their actions. Sociopaths aren't punished for being sociopaths. They are punished for breaking laws. As well, 4% of Americans are sociopaths. If we put every sociopath in jail, we'd have some pretty full prisons. Homosexuality does not injure the homosexual, their partner homosexual, or anyone else. Therefore, there is no reason why it should be illegal or wrong.
  5. And then you go and do exactly that. Citing quotations out of context without in depth study of the history in the area are completely meaningless, and are an insult to intellectualism and thought. This is coming from an agnostic, as well. Too bad they're from reading and not relying on a site. Is it too much to ask for a religion to preach love and peace to everyone, and not direct it's followers to hurt and disdain others? Fine. Let's do the context for 2:6. 2. The Cow (Al-Baqarah) In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful. 1 I, God, am the best knower. 2 This Book, there is no doubt in it, is a guide to those who keep their duty, 3 Who believe in the Unseen and keep up prayer and spend out of what We have given them, 4 And who believe in that which has been revealed to thee and that which was revealed before thee, and of the Hereafter they are sure. 5 These are on a right course from their Lord and these it is that are successful. 6 Those who disbelieve -- it being alike to them whether thou warn them or warn them not -- they will not believe. 7 God has sealed their hearts and their hearing; and there is a covering on their eyes, and for them is a grievous chastisement. * * * 8 And there are some people who say: We believe in God and the Last Day and they are not believers. 9 They seek to deceive God and those who believe, and they deceive only themselves and they perceive not. 10 In their hearts is a disease, so God increased their disease, and for them is a painful chastisement because they lie. 11 And when it is said to them, Make not mischief in the land, they say: We are but peacemakers. 12 Now surely they are the mischief-makers, but they perceive not. 13 And when it is said to them, Believe as the people believe, they say: Shall we believe as the fools believe? Now surely they are the fools, but they know not. 14 And when they meet those who believe, they say, We believe; and when they are alone with their devils, they say: Surely we are with you, we were only mocking. 15 God will pay them back their mockery, and He leaves them alone in their inordinacy, blindly wandering on. 16 These are they who buy error for guidance, so their bargain brings no gain, nor are they guided. 17 Their parable is as the parable of one who kindles a fire but when it illumines all around him, God takes away their light, and leaves them in darkness -- they cannot see. 18 Deaf dumb, (and) blind, so they return not: 19 Or like abundant rain from the clouds in which is darkness, and thunder and lightning; they put their fingers into their ears because of the thunder-peal, for fear of death. And God encompasses the disbelievers. 20 The lightning almost takes away their sight. Whenever it shines on them they walk in it, and when it becomes dark to them they stand still. And if God had pleased, He would have taken away their hearing and their sight. Surely God is Possessor of power over all things. * * * That's the full verse before and after it. http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/The_Holy_ ... hammad_Ali)/2._The_Cow . Tell me that the quote is taken out of context. Here is an entire several verses all about Jews. I can go on and on and on, the context all agrees with me. Couldn't resist this one. Enlighten me, oh knowledgeable one. I clearly am lacking at your ability to take passages clear meanings, then change them to be acceptable to my morals, obviously. Tell me what I'm doing wrong, if you can. Oh, I get the point. I'm not allowed to quote scripture, because it's difficult to deflect the meaning so it appears moral, and not offensive to anyone who reads it. I'm not allowed to quote from scripture, because you have to study for years to understand that it's not offensive to anyone, it's truly a religion of peace and you cannot question it. I'm not allowed to quote from scripture, because it's impossible to defend against. You say I have to include the context, so I do so. Suddenly I'm not understanding the point; I'm supposed to accept the scripture is peaceful and moral, when it's clearly not, and continue the discussion, conceding the point. I'm supposed to understand that thousands of years ago, this was okay and the way things were done, so it's completely acceptable to apply them today, cleave it to them, accept them as holy truth, and certainly don't question our present day morals, because of course the bronze age savages couldn't be moral, right? Sorry, it doesn't work that way.

  8. Could you clarify something for me? I'm a bit confused when you say archaelogists....are you referring to human archaelogists, or future archaelogists of a different race/species? It doesn't matter. The point is that just because some parts of a book turn out to be true, doesn't mean we can accept the rest. Just because we know that New York City, the Empire State Building, and The USA exist, doesn't mean there's a super powerful alien who can fly and stop bullets roaming around. The same goes that just because we know that some of the historical stuff in the bible is true, doesn't mean there's an all powerful cloud being floating around. We know that some of the historical events that occur in the Odyssey and the Iliad actually happened. Does that mean Poseidon rules the seas and there's nymphs and dryads about? Of course not. It most certainly matters...I have 2 different approaches I can take as far as responding to that. Either you're referring to archaelogists of our current human race and I can explain why that's a silly statement, or you're referring to imaginary archaelogists of a race that comes about after us and I can explain how that's not a good comparison to the bible. Say it's humans then, but I still don't see how it could matter at all. I like my Odyssey example better anyhow. Just because some things are true in a document doesn't mean that the whole thing is true, and to argue the opposite is inane. *writes document telling of Obama's inauguration as President of The United States. Later on, states that Obama turned out to be a mutant super being that controls time itself. Expects document to be taken as truthfully as the bible, because some of it is true.* (yes, there are different reasons why the bible's main subject matter is taken as truthful, but that's not the point I'm attacking. Just because something says some truthful things, does not mean everything else it says is true or even likely)
  10. No it isn't. You know that feeling you get when you distinguish between right and wrong? THAT'S religion. The mysteriousness you feel looking up at the big 'ol sky? THAT'S religion. Personal beliefs are not gathered from man's print. They can be imprinted and enforced, leastwise morals, but personal beliefs are always held in a man's bosum. Or woman's. Just talking all old style. -_- Also, when it comes to the bible and Christianity, many things stated in the bible have been found true, and historically proven. Other items and artifacts have been found and dug up validating the bible. =P Hundreds of years from now archealogists find a superman comic. They find, that in it, it talks of buildings and cities that do indeed exist. Does it mean the subject matter is true?
  11. If that's true, you should have absolutely no problem completing fully Dan Barker's Easter Challenge. http://www.ffrf.org/books/lfif/stone.php "The conditions of the challenge are simple and reasonable. In each of the four Gospels, begin at Easter morning and read to the end of the book: Matthew 28, Mark 16, Luke 24, and John 20-21. Also read Acts 1:3-12 and Paul's tiny version of the story in I Corinthians 15:3-8. These 165 verses can be read in a few moments. Then, without omitting a single detail from these separate accounts, write a simple, chronological narrative of the events between the resurrection and the ascension: what happened first, second, and so on; who said what, when; and where these things happened. Since the gospels do not always give precise times of day, it is permissible to make educated guesses. The narrative does not have to pretend to present a perfect picture--it only needs to give at least one plausible account of all of the facts. Additional explanation of the narrative may be set apart in parentheses. The important condition to the challenge, however, is that not one single biblical detail be omitted. Fair enough?" um, yeah..these aren't actual "contradictions" as i was meaning. The thing about this is that each one of these are just accounts from different people. They are bound to be a little different each, mostly just in the wording, and yet still there is really no contradiction as they all not only deliver the same message in the end, but are not inspired by the holy spirit, but rather MEN(aka HUMANS not being influenced by god on what to write(one of the very few times in the bible where they can put it in there own words)) I mean really? the point is it was in the morning as they knew it(they didn't use the 12 hour clock we do now, rather just sunset to sunset), and it could have still been dark when the women left and john saw them, and Luke may have only known that it was early in the morning(maybe he was just waking up, or wasn't up at the time), and mark said they arrived at the sepulchre at the rising of the sun, which would completely validate John's writing as they could have left when it was yet dark, and arrived at the tomb at the rising of the sun. simple. Much is also lost in different translations for they say different things and word things differently for different readers. Most of the cases posed are just plain word choice differences. Those that weren't can't be used as an example because again, these are what men themselves thought they saw. One can see something the other didn't, or see two sides of the same thing and disagree(the farmer and the two color hat story, don't remember what its called. Between the lions ftw). So it's not the word of god, there are contradictions, it's written by men who can be wrong. Thanks.

  13. I can stand two of his plays- Hamlet and The Tempest. The Tempest is far better, and it's the only one of his plays I've bothered to buy. I'll agree with your assessment of his overatedness.
  14. Does anyone (besides children) believe in the toothfairy? Does anyone believe in pink unicorns? It might be wrong to base truth off the amount of believers, but when some guy made up a story and everyone, even him, knew it was a story then you can't tell me that's not saying something... Children are a lot of people. They don't think it's made up. You yourself claim that we cannot understand god and he is inherently illogical, so we might as well be children in this claim as well, nay? Sure, in this instance it does say something, but once you apply that premise to history and other examples, it falls through. If there really is a logical fallacy stating it's wrong to say there is a difference between God and the toothfairy because mankind accepts the fact that the toothfairy is nothing more than a fabrication used for children, well then that's a bit of irony right there. All you are doing is taking things out of context. I accept the fact that god is a fabrication. 18% of the United States is non religious. The tooth fairy is irrational, that's why we don't believe in it. It's just not rational to think that a fairy steals childrens teeth, replacing them with money in the night. As well, it's not rational to think in terms of a cartoon universe, where the cartoonist can do anything and talking snakes and zombies come back from the dead. The people who don't believe in the toothfairy might be wrong? Yes. You can't disprove the tooth fairy conclusively. Maybe the tooth fairy is now dead, but used to exist. Maybe the tooth fairy tricks adults into stealing teeth so as to divert suspicion. I don't see this as an argument against the existence of any god. If anything, it only shows that their concept of god was most likely the wrong one if god/gods really do exist. What makes your version of God superior to Zeus's? How is Zeus' wrong? If Christianity slowly died out and Scientology became the majority, would that make it true? Of course not. Was Christianity more true when more people believed in it in the Dark Ages? Of course not. Truthiness is not tied to public opinion. Nope. The sole purpose (or intention) of the fairy is to exchange money for your teeth. You can prove that it's fake by observing how the fairy doesn't fulfill that purpose. God has many more roles than that and I'd imagine it would be quite difficult to be a human being and at the same time tell me what God's intentions are. And you say my arguments are devastating? What purposes does God fulfill? Preventing evil? Nope. Why isn't everyone in one religion, the true correct one? Surely an all powerful god, would be able to, say, implant a full text of the bible or his holy book, whichever he is, into everyone's minds at birth? I fail to see any purposes that God fulfills that I can see. I believe there is a chance of there being God because it's such a universal concept and I think the idea of there being no intelligent mind-work behind creating the universe and our existence is just as unrealistic as God existing. I don't believe there is a chance of there being a toothfairy because a long time ago somebody decided to make kids happy about losing teeth, so he came up with the idea for parents to lie to their children and say that a fairy would replace their tooth with money, but the parents would actually be doing it while they slept. Did you know that over the entire history of civilized man, more people have thought the earth was flat and the sun revolved around it than people who know it's a spheroid? 18% of the US is non religious, and Great Britain has a much larger percentage. The public mind does not make a statement true, in any way shape or form. More is necessary. I see no reason why the term "god" can't be used loosely. Even if that cosmic being didn't qualify with our expectations of a god, he would be the closest thing and we could always change the definition. I'm still waiting for cannibalism's defining of the true power of his god concept. Maybe I could define my left nostril as god. Would that make sense at all? Of course not. My left nostril fulfills a purpose, and we can see it. It helps me breath. Or maybe evil has a purpose. What purpose? I see no reason for gratuitous evil, if there is a superbeing capable of stopping it. I couldn't put it better than this argument by Nicholas Tattersall- http://www.infidels.org/library/modern/ ... /evil.html . EDIT: another problem with suffering. If God decrees that we suffer, why aren't we obstructing God's plan when we give drugs to relieve pain? A girl breaks her arm; if only God knows how much pain is right for her, who are we to mend it? Isn't it interfering with god's will to cause suffering for some unknown process if we alleviate it? In fact, wouldn't causing more suffering by killing and beating people up be positive-after all, suffering is purposeful for god, so the more of it the better, right?
  15. AUGH. THANK YOU. I've been trying to figure out the right way to say this for AGES. But I could never just, do it. Thank you. Logic, is, quite simply, our only system of thought that works. It's the only thing that can make accurate predictions, it's the only thing that can test the likelihood of a concept or idea. Logic is the principle behind the scientific method, which is entirely responsible for our current high quality of life. Logic is that which allows us to contemplate metaphysics. Logic is important so others can follow your train of thinking. Otherwise, without logic, you have nothing but a collection of random thoughts that cannot be tied together. Some logic is erroneous, or a logical fallacy, but even bad logic is still a cohesive grouping of thoughts that leads to a specific conclusion. Logic allows us to draw on the wisdom of those who came before us and build upon it. Positing that something cannot be defined by logic and reason immediately removes it from discussion. I can just as easily claim whatever I want is true, and when you claim it's illogical and contradictory and unreasonable, I scream "Faith" and it's just as valid as your concept. There's no reason to discuss something not understandable by definition; it's full of hogwash. Can god create a square circle? http://www.triviumpursuit.com/articles/ ... _logic.php
  16. That only applies to gods that are defined with clear charicteristics, not the agnostic belief that there could be a god. Also, most organized religions can have a clear contradiction in there dogma that provides a logical disproving of their accuracy.(like christianity having a god that is forgiving yet flooded the earth). All I definitively believe is that there is a god and that it is a generally good being. As I anticipate the classic how is god good if the world has so many problems lets note that I did not claim god was an all powerful being (could have any amount of power from infinite to zero with infinite being highly unlikely due to problems in the world). If you can find a flaw in that I will be impressed. I was referring to Zierro; you two have very different belief systems. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Well, there's the fact that you're basing your belief on no proof at all. If god has no power at all or very little power, why call him god at all? He would merely be a very powerful cosmic being. I will still posit the problem of evil. If your god has very little power to thwart evil, then he's not really a god of sorts. If your god has lots of power to thwart evil, you could surely post some examples. If your god has power to thwart evil, but doesn't, then he's not good. Then, I will then again refer to my argument from non-cognitivism. Your last response was: The god concept as a statement is meaningless, and thus the hypothesis can be discarded as illogical by default, the same as if I posited the existence of "gritchnaehndkj". If I said that, you might immediately start wondering what on earth it could be referring to, while it does not refer to anything at all- it is completely and inherently meaningless. While the concept of God subjectively might stir powerful emotions and images of men in white robes, the term god itself lacks a positive, objective identity, having no primary attributes as shown several pages back. Since God is supposed to be "infinite" lacking time restraints (etc), it can be shown that god is a meaningless, negative concept, much like "I am not Stephen Harper, I do not have blonde hair, I do not hate everyone, I do not _______." While God is undefined as of now, it is meaningless, and atheism is completely justified. While I agree with you that your version of deism is the most rationally justified theistic belief system, it is still flawed inherently, as shown. If you'd like to try to define god logically, please try  I've enjoyed this particular argument(much better than lecturing people on burdens of proof :P ). http://www.infidels.org/library/modern/ ... gless.html http://www.infidels.org/library/modern/ ... ition.html EDIT: I promised. Now I have to ask several easy questions and one hard one to try to get a handle on your god and to fulfill my statements. Can your god create something ex nihilo (i.e., without using materials that already exist)? Can your god create a water-breathing man? Can your god create green snow? Can your god create red grass? Can your god create flowers that speak Chinese? Can your god create a human being with 30 legs? Can your god create a woman who gives birth to elephants? Can your god create a teacup that dances with a spoon? Can your god create a second moon to orbit the earth? Can your god remove all salinity from the worlds oceans? Can your god create a biological organism which requires no nutrients or oxygen to live? and finally; you've heard it before folks; can god create a rock so heavy, he can't lift it?
