  1. I see what you are trying to do here, except that pretty much all Zamorakians are evil, yet the real life example are not. You are just talking about a small radical group.

Yeah, I was playing with the concept, thinking of who would write the counterpoint. I settled on this version because I thought it would be funny if in Runescape, they really were evil. I wouldn't read too much into the second part if I were you.

  2. Reavers aren't evil and Lords aren't good. It's more like...well, more like...here, let me quote Mark Rosewater on the Magic: the Gathering color pie.

Id like to make a quick aside about white and the concept of good. Good and evil are labels used by people to signify whether something promotes their values or attacks their values. Something that promotes the values you believe in is good. Something that attacks the values you believe in is evil. Each color in Magic believes strongly in the thing it seeks. Therefore it sees itself as good and the enemies that oppose it as evil.

Many humans share some global beliefs (the taking of a human life is wrong, for example). Some of whites tenets line up with some of these universal human beliefs. Therefore white is sometimes seen as the color of good. Ah, but white is neither inherently good nor evil. White, as well as every other color in Magic, will do things that can be labeled both good and evil, and even that might not be consistent from person to person. Preservation of life is very white. Most of you would probably classify that as good. Fascism is also very white. Most of you would probably classify that as evil.

I mention this because I believe its important to separate the white-black conflict from good versus evil. Morality versus amorality. Light versus dark. Purity versus corruption. The white/black conflict takes on many shades, but "good versus evil" is far too subjective to use properly. Lets take one of the elements of the white/black conflict, the rights of the group versus the rights of the self. This conflict pits socialism versus capitalism. Capitalism is the black side of the argument. Is capitalism inherently evil? I dont think so. (Although I know there are those that would disagree with me.) Ill talk more about black (including its good side) when we get to Black Week.

I cant talk about black without discussing the touchy issue. Is black synonymous with evil? I believe no. Sure, people associated with black can be evil. Its clearly the color most prone to becoming evil. Most traditional evil fantasy villains fall into black. And early Magic flavor clearly played up the evilness of black. But having a high predisposition towards evil is not the same as being evil. Let me explain.

The color wheel is a tool used to give structure to the games flavor. Each point (aka color) on the wheel represents a different philosophy. When a color embodies a sentiment, its unique to that color. Allies of that color might be sympathetic to the sentiment but they do not embody it outright. Thus, the first reason black cannot be synonymous with evil is that its not limited to black.

Every color on the color wheel is capable of committing evil acts in the name of that colors philosophy. White will create fascism. Red will commit manslaughter. Green will violently destroy things and blue will wantonly steal them. Evil is not about beliefs but actions. And all five colors are capable of doing evil things.

Second, many of the things black embodies can be used for good. For example, black is the color that stresses the importance of the individual. This is a fundamental part of things like capitalism and the American Constitution. Selfishness has its good uses. Sometimes, people really should put themselves first.

Third, people often confuse amorality with immorality. Black isnt against morality. It simply doesnt believe it means anything. An amoral person is just as likely to commit moral acts as immoral ones.

So yes, black mages often can be evil. But black as a color is not inherently evil. Being influenced by blacks philosophies does not necessarily mean that one will commit an evil act. That being the case, we cannot say that black represents evil. More closely aligned with evil than the other colors? Fine. More ripe with potential for evil? Sure. Evil? No. And thats a very important distinction.

    It's more like that.

  3. Linking to TV Tropes, eh? :shame:

I confess that I was stuck there for about an hour after I wrote this post...

    High five for AP Calc!

    *high fives*

That population density problem towards the end of the multiple choice was murder and I know I missed at least a few points on the free response, but I felt pretty confident about the test overall.

If you see a Kingly, you can always get your friends to come catch it. Its as much help to them as to you.

My friends are strong, independent people who can find their own implings. I want money for me.

There's usually some 99 hunter running around who I can tip off, but wouldn't you rather be eating the pizza than delivering it? Why be the scout when you could be the marshal?

  4. I think it was genius to put it as task only for reasons Bladewing has mentioned. What's the point of adding another slayer monster with a 1M drop? (not even talking about the overcrowding due to the awesome mage xp, which would lead to even more frustration).

What's wrong with "another" slayer monster with a 1m drop? It would still be incredibly profitable to kill thanks to its other drops, which are quite valuable on their own, and it would still avoid overcrowding thanks to the 93 slayer requirement (which is really high, although admittedly pie-able without the task-only thing) and the spawns that Kuradal would presumably want to add to her dungeon.

  5. Were it not for the slayer-task-only requirement, these would be PACKED. The ability to hit 76s with Fire surge gives HUGE xp (around 100k an hour) with lots of compensation even without the staff. The staff would crash and we'd have dark bows all over again.

I fail to see what's wrong with that scenario; in fact, I would prefer it to the situation we have now. Giving efficient magic xp to high-level slayers doesn't seem like a problem considering the restrictions, and why is it bad if the staff crashes? I think it would be good to have the staff widely available, as it's really the only staff in the game that's actually powerful. What if whips were as rare as godswords? They're pretty much essential if you want to train melee, so the result would be to make efficient melee training unaffordable for the vast majority of scapers.

  6. Very nice list.

Randoms being number 1 was a surprise. Personally its all the small updates which would get number one for me. Everything from the summoning tab, the quick prayers tab and so on. They are used a lot, but really get acknowledged as being completely awesome.

I made a conscious decision to exclude those because it would have made it way too hard to pick ten. I had a full 15 that I omitted because I wanted to focus on the bigger ones.

Good list, the random event update was done perfectly and has really improved on the enjoyability of the game. While the logout timer and pathfinding fixes were even better, the random update has to be the best content wise.

I agree with the pathfinding, but it doesn't feel right to me to have a bug fix as one of the top 10 updates of 2009, y'know?

Oh and congrats on being retweeted by the OfficialJagex Twitter. :)

    Woah. B)

  7. The slayer master, doing a task inside the cavern, how easy it is to access with and without the ring/fairy ring compared to shilo, whether it is worth it to switch to her from shilo. You said that you didn't have 75 slayer so all you have done is reviewed what other people had said about it not your opinion. I would much rather see your opinion on the matter considering this is your review.

All the relevant information required to make an evaluation is available without directly receiving a task from Kuradal, unless I were to review the atmosphere inside the new dungeon or something. The new content is similar enough to existing content that there's very little I need to experience directly--I'm familiar enough with most of the monsters on the list to be able to know which ones I like to see and which ones I don't, and I'm familiar enough with the combat system to understand that +4 damage to every hit is good. As one who's skipped Greater Demon tasks for lack of a decent spot for killing them, I think I can be grateful for a new spot to kill them, for example.

This update is an extension of existing game mechanics that I like to think I already understand, and I've reviewed it from the perspective of one who's already been through more than 70 levels of slayer. I see no problem with that.
