Royal Crossbow is worth the pricetag. It is essentially free repairs like you said, and it fires cheap but powerful shots. If you are ability spamming, you should have a higher dps with a 2h ranged weapon than dual-wielding. Unless you are bossing, you really have no need for a shiled + crossbow combo.
