The degradation of Old School RS
Oh this can't be good. Quick, hide it before the EoC and OSRS extremist come back to "debate". In all seriousness this shouldn't be another EoC vs. OSRS debate. It should really talk about how we can keep OSRS alive, which I think OP was trying to get to (which I think there is already an existing topic, tweeks that should be added to OSRS). That's the exact point I tried to make with my first post, but apparently someone doesn't have an updated Webster's dictionary, thus distracting me from what I meant. Anyways, I think saving the game is up to Jagex. If they continue to show interest then the player base will as well and vice versa.

The degradation of Old School RS
"Ain't" is a word in the English dictionary, nonetheless, you totally ignored my point I made in that post.

The degradation of Old School RS
The thing is, this is a game. You can't use real life sayings to fully express anything. I can say "If it ain't broke don't fix it," (Which is technically grammatically correct FYI) and you can say stuff about getting up and trying again, but in the game world that's not always the case. Obviously there's always room for improvement, the game world isn't static, but one wrong move and your playerbase is gone, making it incredibly difficult, and in some cases even impossible, to get up and try again. Just saying.

EoC Discussion
I'm not saying WoW is the first or last game to use this method, but just from my experience the EoC combat looks a lot like WoW's. I'm also not saying anything like "RS = WoW" because it's not. It's just simply the easiest comparison because they're amongst the 2 best online MMO's in history. I just think if Jagex really wanted to, they could've made a newer, more innovative combat system, and consequently, players would've recognized the efforts and allowed for more time for tinkering with it. At this point, this kind of system is used in too many games, therefore no one will wait around for an imperfect system when they can go elsewhere and jump into the polished combat interfaces. That was my point for the most part. As for pushing away casual players, it may, on paper, be easier, but in my mind and plenty of others it is much more difficult to grasp now. This along with the incredibly inflated economy will make it much harder for casual players to play, thus draining the games population. Quite the quandary from my standpoint.

The degradation of Old School RS
I agree with that above statement, but if the population goes down like RSC's did, the game is doomed even worse then RSC! I played RSC on my original account and the one I'm on now, I've gotten the full taste of RuneScape, and I don't think it's possible a game survives without a discontinued item for players to work to. What inevitably keeps players interested in EoC is there desire to be wealthy, and in that fact, buy the rare things wealthy people are associated (rares, high level armors, etc.). It's funny that in all my time I've owned such a minute number of rares, I just don't see many players being able to enjoy the game for much longer the way I play, which is a more "I'll worry about my bank when it comes time," style. Anyways, point-and-click attacking is the RuneScape I remember from my childhood, I'll always enjoy that more. An action bar and adrenalin reminds me too much of WoW, which some of my friends and fraternity brothers grew up with, so they'll always enjoy it more. I can't say which is better overall, but for RS, point-and-click combat was a reason for wild success. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!"

EoC Discussion
The adrenaline bar and new interfaces for combat make me feel like the game is taking another turn towards becoming WoW. The game has gradually slid there over the years, and one reason RS stood out enough to not get passed an initial comparison was because of the "point and click" combat style. I didn't necessarily enjoy the combat system back before EoC, but Jagex has thoroughly pushed me away. I have trained combat just enough to know I don't like it since EoC. I just don't understand why they continue down that road. Obviously, Jagex and Blizzard draw on a lot of the same crowd, but I would like to know, is Jagex trying to create the medieval equivalent of WoW to entice players leaving WoW? I can't think of any other reason to be honest. It's incredible that a dedicated group of people can't find a better, more innovative way to get people into there game. I just wish Jagex would listen, and ACTUALLY listen, to some things players want. The EoC update seems to be, to me, an overwhelming failure. Then just to top it all off, they make armory more strategic. It's no longer cut and dry, Dragon > Rune, type comparisons. It pushes away the casual player, like myself, from combat. I never was a fan of combat, but, since EoC came out, I've trained my RSC and OSRS combat a great deal, solely because I miss the old mechanic.

The degradation of Old School RS
I split my time equally between all versions of the game, and quite frankly, each game has there own set of pros and cons. I've played RuneScape for a long time now and don't have a favorite game time period. I never was much of a combat guy, EoC made no difference to me. Spilling is becoming easier, which, in a way, makes the game easier and more enjoyable, but at the same time, degrades all the efforts I put into the game from 2004-2008, when the game began to start getting terribly dumbed down. Some of the updates make me sad/mad/disappointed, in a gaming sense of the word, but, if you really enjoy the game, one update won't keep you away from playing. "Ignorance is strength." From 1984, by George Orwell, is a perfect quote for me in respect to the game. I know that, personally, I don't enjoy certain aspects of the game, therefore I stay away from them. No update to that aspect will ever make me interested. That's at least my personal logic behind sticking with EoC, while simultaneously playing OSRS, AND RSC.

The degradation of Old School RS
I think these are decent ideas, I agree with your opinion though. I myself, being an 8 or 9 year veteran of RS, find OSRS to be a fun game, for now. The problem I see is that the market is actually gonna collapse on itself without rares actually being discontinued. All the collectible resources will become saturated and the price will drop, making money extremely hard to get and items to be extremely cheap, thus, driving away the player base. It's almost like Jagex wants the OSRS to go away quietly along with everybody who plays it. Interesting tactics, IMO.

Hello!
Hello Tip.It'ers! I have quite enjoyed my years of anonymity on these forums, lurking along the outskirts, only coming in to check up on names I recognized. Now, I find myself again making an account with some half hearted promise, of sorts, to post and get to know the people of this forum. Anyways, I'm Nick, I'm 18 years of age, and have been playing RuneScape for approximately 8 or 9 years on my account named 'Gotta Eat.' I am in a fraternity, I have a great family and girlfriend, and I love just about all things sports, food, and writing! I especially love golf, basketball, football, and baseball, as well as taking hours and hours to finish a bit of fiction no one will ever see. I am currently going into my sophomore year of college with a business management major, and a creative writing minor. Odd combo. Anywho, I'm also working on a poetry project entitled "Apple," alongside one of my closest friends from high school, who is also a fraternity brother of mine. If I get acquainted with the forums I'd expect I'll post the project eventually! For now, I can't seem to think of another thing to write for my intro. Funny how when writing about another words flow freely, but when writing about yourself nothing comes out. If you wanna get to know me, I'll probably be a common face around these forums, and you can also get in touch with me through RuneScape by adding "Gotta Eat!" Thanks, Nick.
