  1. Definite long term favourite is The Trapeze Swinger by Iron & Wine. I listened to it so much at the beginning of the summer it reminds me so much of that time in my life, a brilliant and happy time (not that now is bad, it's just nice to remember). Depending on my mood it can bring the biggest smile over my face or bring me close to tears, usually both. So much emotion in it for me. Right now I'm listening to Warning Sign by Coldplay and Call Me On Your Way Back Home by Ryan Adams a lot but it's just because I like the lyrical honesty of them, they're too situation specific to be long term favourites.
  2. What a strange question Adrenal. Generalising, it's like asking why do you believe empirical evidence over any other explanation? Sunli's long post has probably been answered but I don't really have time to read all the thread to see where, so I'll simply say your point is valid but has been addressed long ago by the anthropic principle. Whether or not you find that a convincing explanation is up to you, but as warri0r pointed out the odds are small but someone has to win the lottery.
  3. 4 pints is £1.55 from a supermarket. It's not as cheap, but in terms of protein/fat/calorie content whole milk is one of the best value foods out there to bulk with. Putting on weight can be done on a budget but it's always going to cost simply because you have to eat a lot more stuff.
  4. Basically, to gain weight calorie intake >> calorie output. So I'd actually take it easy on the cardio stuff (although swimming's quite a muscular activity) because you might end up burning more calories than you're eating, and even if you don't you'll still be pushing the ratio down. So stop running. If you're serious about this, I'd recommend buying a basic whey protein shake (just protein, not one of those crappy "bulking" ones which has lots of sugars in it) and a set of adjustable dumbells. If you want to gain muscle you need to do heavier lifts than bodyweight allows you, which is why i'd recommend adjustable dumbells. Do basic compound stuff, chest presses, flyes, shoulder presses, bicep curls (meh), single arm rows etc. etc. 5 reps of 5 sets as heavy as you can for each one. Legs are damn hard to work without a gym membership but you could do dumbell squats. Have a protein shake and some carbs after each workout, and otherwise eat like it's your living. To gain 1lb of muscle a week you want to be eating a 500 calorie daily excess. People overobsess with eating clean, you're not bodybuilding and i'm sure your heart is probably fine so if you need to eat muffins to get carbs don't feel bad about it. Some people might disagree with me about this though. Oh and something I did to put on weight over the summer was drink ~4 pints of whole milk a day. Sounds like a lot but some coaches recommend a gallon. It works, and isn't as bad for you as you might think. Not a long term strategy though. If you have any questions about this, obviously just ask. Without wanting to blow my own trumpet too much, I do know my stuff, even if I can't always stick to it myself.
  5. Indy's already said most of what I was going to say, but for christ's sake use some common sense. Consider the size of the moon and consider the size of two small spacecraft, there's no way that collision could do anything that we'd notice in terms of gravity. Much of the media is astonishingly ignorant when it comes to science.
  6. Ay? The whole point of the show was that Derren revealed at the end that it was just a massive numbers game how that one woman got lucky. That was probably my favourite of all his, I was sat in a room with lots of very smart friends and none of us really could figure it out, we just discounted the fact that he might be using luck, it was clever how he drew you in. The lottery number thing was a bit of a let down to be honest, for someone with such a good knowledge of human behaviour he seemed to think we'd be surprisingly guilliuble in accepting the "wisdom of crowds" explanation. I mean a child could see that guessing the weight of an ox is different to guessing the outcome of a random process. Still, I like him and I'm sure the other events will be worth watching.
  7. On the plus side, it seems to have livened up another boring hollywood awards show. And he kind of did have a point about the video. Still, temper tantrum toddler.

  9. Listening to a first run through now. Very Queen-esque at times, ridiculously over the top but surprisingly good.

  11. I agree with a lot of the ones already posted, although I'd add The Eternal to the Joy Division list. A few more: [hide=Hope There's Someone - Antony and the Johnsons][yt]8b5HHRT8xvw[/yt][/hide] [hide=Sanvean (I Am Your Shadow) - Lisa Gerrard][yt]1xpkRj99FH0[/yt][/hide]
  12. For a start, this kind of thing doesn't happen every day. Reading the details of the case what those boys did to the others boys is uncommon and made me deeply sick. Secondly, as repulsive as what they did is punishing the boys does little to address the problem. Their mother was a cannabis addict and their father a violent alcoholic who would make them fight each other for entertainment, if they didn't he'd beat them. They were never fed or washed and instead would have to scavenge the streets for food. Do you honestly think boys of that age would do what they did if they didn't come from one hell of a broken home? They'll be sent to prison for long enough that they'll lose their childhood, whatever was left of it. Hopefully with enough counselling and care they might begin to be reformed, but it might not be possible. Asking for violent retribution is childish and doesn't make you any better than the children themselves. The problem doesn't lie with isolated feral children, it lies with a society that allows families and communities to get into such a state. The children were notorious where they lived, but police were largely indifferent before this case (they'd previously almost murdered another child) and social workers clearly hadn't done enough to help them.
  13. DIsney own Pixar, and you can't really say the quality of Pixar's films has suffered. I think it'll be a similar situation, Disney will leave Marvel to develop their own ideas and then use their marketing power to get them going.
  14. I think every Bond has his merits, and each to some extent reflects the mood the era the films were in. For me, it's got to be Daniel Craig. I grew up watching Brosnan from far too young an age but (strangely) I empathise and identify with Craig's portrayal of Bond more than any other, especially in Casino Royale. After that it has to be Connery, but to be honest I love all Bond films.
  15. I never did get into Animal Collective much. They're pretty highly-regarded in the music circle I belong to, but I can't seem to enjoy their music. Perhaps I'm listening to the wrong albums. I thought you finally 'got' them half a year ago when Merriweather Post Pavillion came out? I liked it a lot when it first came out, yeah. But I tried to listen to it recently and I just got so bored after about 3 tracks. It's not even like I overlistened to it or anything. Weird. To be fair i've never really listened to much beyond MPP, but they're hyped so much I figure it might just take me a while to get into them. Listened to their first album last night, got the rest queued on my Spotify playlist. A lot of albums I don't get first time round. Lucky - Radiohead
  16. Good luck guys, and don't sweat it too much. Uni's don't care for them that much anymore, it's not the end of the world whatever happens with them. A-levels were much more important (can't believe that's all behind me now).
  17. Loveless by My Bloody Valentine is an incredible album. Other than that I have pretty much no knowledge of the genre when I really should.
  18. A solid list with a lot of albums I very much agree with.
  19. The First Days Of Spring - Noah and the Whale Their first album didn't impress me, but as a rule if anything gets a five star review in The Sunday Times Culture i'll check it out. The album is beautiful musically, the guys lyrics could do with a bit of work at times but overall gets a thumbs up from me first listen. The first song is utterly gorgeous though.
