First off, you won't build significant (any?) muscle mass doing situps. If you want to build muscles I'd strongly advise you to buy a couple of adjustable dumbells for home, they don't have to be expensive, just something to add some resistance. If you do, use them to perform the basic exercises for each muscle group. For shoulders do standing presses, bicep curls for biceps, overhead extensions for triceps etc. etc. (I can give you more detail if you want). But if you really don't want to spend any money but still want to build muscle, research and perform the following exercises: pressups (normal and with your legs raised on a chair), burpees, pistol squats, tricep dips with a chair, pullups off some object in the house and handstand presses if you can. The downside to this is that some muscle groups are very neglected (shoulders, biceps, legs) so this is why I'd recommend some dumbells. As for your back, I'm no physio but if doing situps strains your back badly then stop doing them. Perform leg raises for your abs. And thoroughly stretch your back before trying any, focus on building up the number instead of continuing until you have to stop because of pain. Listen to your body.

  5. My Girls - Animal Collective I love the way this song builds.
  6. You really think so? I find it a bit more violent than, say, the Bible, but it's relatively mellow compared to much of the Torah. Then again, viewpoints can change with age - you've got a good couple of years on me. Absolutely. In the Hadith there are a lot of peaceful passages but unfortunately they tend to be the earlier ones chronologically which are superseded by the later ones in Islam scholarship, and the later passages were when Muhammad was living a more violent life and waging war. The Qur'an is full of violence and bigotry, but also full of wisdom and peace. It's a common contradiction found in ancient texts compiled over many years. I'm all for the teaching of the peaceful passages and an honest reading of the Qur'an but I honestly believe that it's not a wholly peaceful book.
  7. Atlantic City - Bruce Springsteen - Live in Dublin God, Springsteen really butchers this song in this version. Really not a fan of this live album.
  8. The Qu'ran does, but I don't think Islam as a religion does.
  9. There's also the problem of false confessions under torture, I'm not sure how effective it really is. If you're in that much pain you'd probably say anything to make it stop. In this situation, I think it is obviously permissible because the situation is so loaded in favour of it having to be permissable. But it's a very slippery slope when you start condoning it, and in general I'm against it.

  12. I really don't think that thinking in these terms does any harm. It's not that people are trying to get an absolute perspective on how big they are in relation to stuff so they can categorise everything on some kind of logarithmic scale in their lives. It's just innocent musings that serve to humble us. It wasn't that long ago that the human race thought that it was at the centre of the Universe and that there wasn't much apart from the Sun and lots of little dots stuck on a background canvas in the sky. Getting an occasional perspective on our true place in the Universe does no harm, at the very least it serves to educate people about astronomical scales. And at best it can give us a new perspective on our lives.

  15. That video Azvareth linked to is one of my favourite's of all time. Carl Sagan was a truly gifted populariser of science. The amount of matter we've sent up is a tiny fraction of the Earth's total mass. For perspective, the Sun loses 4 million tonnes of mass every second, which seems like a lot but the mass of the sun is so large this isn't significant. Plus we're showered with infalling cosmic debris every day, which will add to the mass, but I'm not sure by how much.

  20. I think I'd teach myself a lot of practical skills in preparation for becoming more independent and being able to support family and friends. Probably basic medicine, surgery, engineering (mechanical and electrical), bushcraft and how to live off the land.

  22. Amazing, I've put it on pre-order already. Thanks for the heads up!
  23. I much prefer owning a CD to just having downloaded it, there's something to be said for being able to play a CD in car, search through them physically or lend them to a mate. That said the bulk of my music is downloaded, sadly, which is simply more out of convenience than preference. If I had the money and time I'd buy more CD's, but I'd rather "just" have it downloaded than not listen to it. As for listening to stuff it changes a lot. By and large I listen to albums, but sometimes I only want to listen to a song here and there (especially when I'm listening to my iPod). I also love playlists, and am really liking Genius playlists in iTunes. Sometimes I might want to get a broad overview of a genre without delving exclusively into one artist.
