  1. Oh man #-o I forgot Natalya whats her name... crap, can't think of it. She's pretty big in Poland:
  2. Sorry Strikers, didn't realize I skipped over that part. AIDS is an important field of research, there is no doubt in that. But the numbers I listed (700 mil, and 15 bil) were for the amount of money given as aid. We're talking aid in the form of drugs/nets, not research for a cure. Pharmaceutical companies around the world are doing AIDS research trying to find a cure, but until a cure us found there is honestly not much we can do to stop AIDS. See the point I am trying to make? You can donate 50 trillion dollars to AIDS relief and no one will be spared death from AIDS. Why spend $1000 to delay the death of one person for a year, when that same $1000 could save the lives of more than 100 children? AIDS research can't be sped up by donations, research is done by the pharmaceutical giants and they have billions upon billions of their own dollars to spend to do just that. So summary of my points, AIDS is a growing crisis that kills more people than Malaria, yet sadly donations can't cure anyone of AIDS right now. Meanwhile the cure for Malaria is in stock and ready to be of use if only there was the money to do so. Once an effective cure for AIDS is found you will find me changing my argument
  3. The United-Nations millennium goals is leading the pack. Their sponsors include the CDC, World Health Organization, Unicef, and US-AID. As you can see, they link to malaria-no-more. Which is the site I had previously listed. http://www.millenniumpromise.org/site/PageServer?pagename=malaria_main Someone asked about American-Idol, they use the same site: http://www.malarianomore.org/american-idol.php Yea, being a Biology major, we discuss this theme a lot. CCA is also proof of how human evolution can happen in short amount of time. Oh, and I'm surprised no one commented on my party hat plan :?
  4. Between 1.8-2.5 million die of Malaria About 3 million die of AIDS. Not a big difference.
  5. What are you getting at MPC, saying people that support AIDS are trendy, or saying we are trendy? Because I hope it is not the latter, I have been an avid Malaria fighter for a long time now, and my experience in the field of Biology has only cemented my resolve.
  6. Right... this is starting to get kinda creepy guys :|
  7. The sites I listed are legit. Malaria.org is fairly well known. Although if you're really worried about corruption use the net site I listed. They work with the UN, UNICEF, and the United Way. If you're still iffy and want to go through a company you trust, like the Red Cross, than you can donate to them and specify on your donation "For Malaria" Here is their donation page: http://www.redcross.org/donate/donate.html Malaria isn't one of the preselected categories to donate to, but you can put it under "other". The Red Cross respects the wishes of the donors and will only use your money for what you tell them Or if anyone else can find a good site, I welcome it.
  8. Bunnies are no match for the cuteness that is the puppy!
  9. Good idea Victor, here's a small list of sites if any of you guys are interested. Simple donating site: http://www.malaria.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=79&Itemid=43 Sponsor a net https://secure.groundspring.org/dn/index.php?aid=12833 By the way, let me explain the nets. Malaria is spread by mosquitoes, and something like 80% of Malaria cases happen at around 1am when the mosquitoes feed on you while you sleep. A simple mosquito net around your bed can save you're life. They cost about $8 to make and $2 to ship, so the standard price for one is $10. Nice thing about the nets is they are re-usable. They can protect a small family for life.
  10. June 12th, 2007 ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Ãâ Malaria, Killer of Men Day 6 Disclaimer: This is a touchy subject for me, I may spill some of my aggression onto this post. Every year, malaria kills over two million people and infects another 450 million. The disease is present in over 100 countries, threatening 40 percent of the world's population. It is the global leading cause of death for children under five, killing one child every thirty seconds. It is the leading cause of death for humans in a dozen African nations. Like AIDS, Malaria can be prevented, but prevention is tricky and is often not followed by the uneducated. This is true for both diseases, however, their similarities between HIV and Malaria end there. Unlike AIDS there is a cure for Malaria. There are drugs on the market can cure 99% of active malarial infections in less than 48 hours. These drugs cost from between $0.08 to $0.95. Less than a dollar. Let̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s think about that one for a minute. People were appalled when I told them humans are being sold for $200, less than cattle. But that honestly pails in comparison to saying the lives of 2 millions human are given up each year because someone doesn̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢t want to spend a 75 cents on them. Who doesn̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢t want to spend the money? Good question, the answer is everyone. People are obsessed with AIDS, really they are. Yes AIDS kills just as many people, but it is an incurable disease at the moment. The drugs that do exist for AIDS simply treat the symptoms and just prolong death by a few years, unlike Malaria drugs that cure the person for life. The cost is also insane: -The price of the newest AIDS medication (which doesn̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢t even cure AIDS̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâæ) is called Atripla. Thirty tablets cost $1,297.61 -The price of the newest malarial medication (which saves the person̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s life) is called ACT . Thirty tablets cost $29.90 Okay, now lets see what people are spending their donations buying. $700 million are spent on Malaria each year. $15 billion is spent towards ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¦Ã¢â¬ÅAIDS relief̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬ÃâÃ
  11. I say Kiera Knightly, but just because she reminds me of a girl I like.
  12. It is a governmental department, I mentioned so in the post. I still mentioned it though because it deserves some recognition and this seemed like good thread to do so in. Also, thanks malo2 and everyone else for the compliments, they make this all worthwhile :

    AIDS Vaccine

Not to be nitpicky, but you are supposed to refer to Science as "the Journal Science" not "Science Journal". I know it sounds like just a technicality but the the Journal Science, along with its British equivalent Nature are two most prestigious magazines in the world. Only revolutionary breakthroughs are published in them, and people spend their lives trying to discover something worthy enough to be put in there. If you make the front page you are essentially guaranteed a Nobel Prize  As opposed to just saying "science journal" which could be any of a thousand journals that deal with science. but the journal actually named "Science" is so far above the rest it is referred to as a proper noun. Anyway, as for the vaccine it's a good start but the problem isn't even close to finished. First off, HIV likes to mutate, and a vaccine will only work on a certain strain so if there is a mutation (which happens every 3-4 years) you have to start back over. Secondly vaccines are not cures. Look at Malaria, it kills 3000 people a day and there are 5 drugs that act as perfect vaccines for it. However no one wants to just hand these things out for free so half of Africa is stull suffering from it. HIV vaccine will the same, a vaccine may protect Americans/Europeans but Africa will still suffer for decades until it trickles down.
  14. I actually agree with you there, those are sneaky business tactics. But these are not the faults of the engineers that work for them, they are the faults of the marketing department. As with other companies, they often have a negative overtone, but I find it interesting to look at what such and so company has actually done to impact the global way of life, and no one can deny Sony has done more than almost any other company. The lithium battery alone had made the world of consumer electronics the way it is today, without it laptop batteries would only last 1/2 as long and most cordless electronics would still be using AAs
  15. Ah, but Airbus gets all the contracts in Europe because it is an European company don't you see? The only fair testing ground in the Middle East, Asia, and Australia, since they don't make their own planes. The Middle East favors AirBus, Asia favors Boeing, and Australia buys both. So we are back to a tie. And indeed both companies are spectacular, making a jet is no small achievement. I gave credit to Boeing in my post since I was impressed one country could pull it off as opposed to a continent, and I gave credit to Boeing for still being in the business after about 100 years, compared to AirBus that came out in the 1970s. My Second Uncle works for the CIA. He can't tell anyone outside his immediate family his job, including us, so I have no idea what he does, but it must be pretty important. That's cool, I know a guy that was a foreign exchange student from Australia in middle school. I kept in touch with him as he joined the Australian army and then he got transfered to the ASIS (Australian Secret Intelligence Service, their CIA). He doesn't talk to me that much anymore though, obviously Notice how I never said I took that picture.... I do own an older Canon but for the post I used a picture which I found on photo.net. Here is a link to the image and camera details: http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=6065405&size=lg No kidding, Lockheed is an amazing company. Insanly high tech, and the engineers that work there are the finest in the Industry. I didn't mention them since they don't do much civilian work though, so not many people could relate to them. I know, I missed a lot of good ones really. Funny you mention those two, as I am a Coke addict and I like Microsoft a bit more than the average iPod owner does, ha. But yea, there are just so many companies and my post was already massive :|
  16. A machine that makes water and such? Thats a chemical impossibility. As for why don't we make things that help the 3rd world? There's no money in it. Who will buy an OLED screen? Every rich person will want one, and soon everyone in the US/Japan/Europe will. Who would buy condensed food? The people in Africa who make less than a dollar a day? It's a sad world that we live in, but companies are out to make profits and there is no money in making things better for those that can't buy your product :|
  17. Wow, I spend 11 hours typing this, and people respond in under a minute. Fast readers guys : /sarcasm
  18. June 11th, 2007 ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Ãâ A Toast to Seven Great Companies. Day 5 Well, we̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢re halfway in our countdown to the 16th of June. Today̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s thread is probably the least ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¦Ã¢â¬Åeye-opening̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬ÃâÃ
  19. I mentioned it in my first post. CST (Central Standard Time). Otherwise knows as Chicago time. Oh and you know could have just checked when I posted this thread, it would have been at midnight last night
  20. I can't hurry, it's the clock! And dude, it's going to be an hour and 2 minutes from now, you sure you want to wait? Lol.
  21. I was afraid someone would bring that up. To put it nicely... blunt trauma
  22. Heh, heh... not advised... This next one is a doozy, the longest one yet I might actually recommend waiting until tomorrow to read it unless you feel like staying up for a while so you can finish reading it. : By the way, you guys have no idea how weird it feels to be me around 11:59pm, knowing there are people out there just waiting for me to hit that "submit" button. :uhh:
  23. You have to start somewhere though. American universities are completely opposite from the basic education system. It's actually quite funny. American high schools rank at the very bottom in world rankings. American Universities are at the top of the charts :-s But yea, you learn an unbelievable large amount of knowledge in your major is a very short time when you are at college. And you can't get to college without a basic groundwork of a school.
  24. Yikes. My room-mate had a tiny 80 page paperback book fall out of his hands and onto the back of his Toshiba laptop. The laptop was closed and off, and the next morning he turned it on and the entire thing look like exactly how you said, like it was hit by a baseball. Cost him $350
  25. Didn't they sacrafice people to thier sun gods etc? Or was that the Aztecs? :ohnoes: Aztecs mainly, but they add did to an extet. They only did that to the people from the neighboring tribes that refused to be in their empire though. I would be in the empire, living on the outskirts. Since your in the empire no one will attack you, and you can head to the city if you ever want to trade.
