Wow, you're right. Must have been the update this morning that changed it.

I averaged xp with the two when I was around 110 combat. The battle axe got right at 25k xp per hour, while the scimitar was a little over 30k. That was when I switched to the scimitar. I really wish I'd spent those countless hours prior to that with a scimitar instead of a battle axe. The battle axe is more accurate and stronger than the scimitar, but the problem is the bonuses are not adequate to balance out the weapons abilities. The scimitar is just too freakin fast. The result is no F2p weapon can come even close to the scimitar in effectiveness. Even against armor the scimitar is more effective, though a real scimitar would be merely a slashing weapon with little effect against an armored opponent. The battle axe should be far more devastating, than the scimitar, for fighting other players wearing plate armor. In spite of this, the scimitar, in game, reigns supreme with no rival. P.S. If you can't tell, I really hate the scimitar, and how blatantly inaccurate it's uses are in the game.

They really did it up on these new emotes. Before I got them I was pessimistic, almost certain they were going to be lame. I just got the second one about an hour ago and I have to say, they are well done. I like the walk especially. It's really over the top, but that's what emotes are supposed to be right? Jagex gets an A+ on these, I am pleasantly surprised.

Well put, and very true. Inherently we see all these negative posts about Jagex. But of course you don't get to see the flipside of that, because who posts they got unbanned with no trouble? We all need to play by the rules, keep our complaints on trivial issues to a minimum and take some anti-jagex rants with a grain of salt. We also need to recognize that Runescape doesn't run itself, Jagex does a wonderful job keeping this game going. Keep things in perspective and appreciate this fantastic game we get to play thanks to the good people at Jagex.

Balancing weapons (formerly "useless weapons")
Lim_Dul replied to Lim_Dul's topic in RuneScape Suggestions
Very detailed analysis raichase. I agree wholeheartedly with much of what you say, but I think the 2h battle axe role is filled by the dharok great axe. I think the r2h needs to stay, as it is the rune two hand sword. I believe the 2h sword would still be pretty even with the other weapons at the speed of the current battle axe. The current 2h is quite unimpressive in battle. Even with it's chances of hitting nice damage, it isn't really all that accurate, plus its lack of a shield hinders it quite a bit. Its accuracy and strength are supposed to be so overwhelming as to make up the shield deficiency. Currently a scimitar with no armor or shield is better than a 2h with no armor or shield. I really like the idea of the prayer bonus for the mace. That adds a bit of an unusual element to it, but it's such a tiny bonus that it really serves no purpose. I'd say it probably needs the bonus of an entire set of monk robes to really have any effect on the outcome of a fight. All these ideas are great and all, but how do we make the leap from dreams to reality? I know in the past I've sent comments to Jagex which received nothing but form letter responses. Do those petitions ever get any changes implemented by Jagex? I genuinely want to see these concepts brought to fruition in future updates. Off topic: One update that I never saw much comment on was the 2h graphics change. I think Jagex did a nice job with that, and I don't really understand what brought it about. I certainly didn't hear any outcry that the 2h looked terrible prior to the update. That was a pleasant alteration, kudos to Jagex. -
Balancing weapons (formerly "useless weapons")
Lim_Dul replied to Lim_Dul's topic in RuneScape Suggestions
The warhammer is one of the most grossly undperpowered weapons. It has all the cost of a a R2h, the poor speed of a battle axe, and less strength then a longsword. Add that all up and you've got an official paperweight. I think the biggest problem is that the weapon speeds play the biggest role in a weapons effectiveness. The faster weapons consistantly beat the slower, more powerful and more expensive weapons. The easiest solution would be for Jagex to close the weapon speed gap. If the 2h hit as fast as the battle axe it might actually be able to go the distance against a scimitar. Then in turn increase the warhammer and battle axe attack speed to that of the longsword, and have the longsword match the scimitar. That seems like it would be a step in the right direction, though some additional tweaking would probably be required. For the ranged weapons, the crossbow and longbow need to get some sort of added bonus to allow them to deal more damage per hit. The crossbow for instance, could be made more effective against plate armor than the short and longbow. -
This is a topic which has been on my mind since rather early on, when I started playing runescape. Bear in mind this pertains to F2p primarily, if not entirely. When I first started out, I figured I would choose a weapon type, and continue to use it through each of it's forms (iron, steel, mith etc.). I figured the mace would be a pretty neat weapon to use, and I didn't see many people using it, which would set me apart. I very quickly learned the mace couldn't even remotely compete with other weapons. I moved on from the mace, to the battle axe. I figured since the battle axe is made from 3 bars of metal, it must be very good for all this expense, plus they just plain look wicked. I adopted the battle axe, and progressed with it all the way through to rune. It seemed alright, until I began to pk regularly, and I started to notice I was consistantly losing fights to equal or lower leveled opponents using scimitars. This lead me to do some studies on weapon effectiveness. My results were very clear. The rune scimitar beats all other rune weapons in effectiveness by a wide margin. The results of this weapon effectiveness gap, is that everyone in the wilderness looks like a carbon copy of one another. 90% of pkers, if not more, use the rune scimitar. The other weapons are relegated to players who don't know any better, and the occassional r2h or battle axe appear for the shock and awe aspect. This seems silly to me, if there are going to be so many weapon varieties, shouldn't they be be somewhat evenly balanced in capabilities? This problem isn't limited to melee weapons. For ranging weapons, how many times have you seen someone using a crossbow or longbow in the wilderness? These weapons pack no more punch than a shortbow, yet are so abysmally slow, they serve no purpose. Why doesn't Jagex make an attempt to raise the bonuses of the weapons that cannot compete? Wouldn't it be more entertaining if everyone used their own weapon with different attributes instead of the same old scimitar and shortbow?

If this idea were implemented, runescape would be over within a week. The mass exodus of long-time players would be so overwhelming, the servers would be shutdown, Jagex would move on and that would be that.

I Will Help You If I Can: Combatting the Greed Factor
Lim_Dul replied to IanBorthwick's topic in General Discussion
Whether the resources are given voluntarily, or taken by the state forcefully, makes little difference. Looking at the economic effect of the specific example of handing out rune axes, the effects are negative across the board. Free rune axes reduce the price of axes, that in turn hurts the rune smiths, who can no longer sell their axes at the cost of the raw materials involved. If the raw materials are more expensive than the axe, then the prices they command will drop, in turn hurting the rune and coal miners. In addition to these people, the nature runes used in smelting rune will also lose value, and the merchants who's sole income is made buying and selling rune axes will be adversely affected as well. All these people lose revenue. Now you claim that the result of all this will increase competition in log sales. The recipients of the rune axes were already buying rune axes however. The only result will be the 15k needed to buy the axe, will not have to be earned in any way. All of this contributes to an economic slowdown, which benefits no one. Bottom line, free axes hurt the runescape economy. -

In reply to Dwarfie76, I draw your attention to Ellsworth Toohey. He preached the good of self-sacrifice via a radio program. The parallel's between the radio program Rand wrote about, and this thread, are disturbingly apparent. The giving of items as described by IanBorthwick, is precisely what Ayn Rand discussed in many of her works. The most obvious example would be Rearden metal (cooincidentally similar to rune  ), which Hank Rearden was expected to sign the patent over to the government for the greater good. But even before that, the concept of freely giving Rearden's invention away was discussed. Rearden not only intended not to give it away, he intended to charge every penny for it he could. This was to ensure it was used by the best organizations, in the most efficient manner. Going further than that, Ayn said that giving away his metal would insult the work of every person in that field. As to "putting the means of production into the hands of people just starting out", this is analogous to the copper mines of Francisco D'anconia. That is precisely what they did when they nationalized the mines in the book. This was a critical point to illustrate the flawed thinking that, giving valuable resources to those in need will result in prospering masses, because in fact the resources were squandered. In the broadest possible terms, selflessness is flawed, because it has no practical function . I believe the exact terms Rand used were that selflessness was founded on death. Tragically I don't have my copy of Atlas Shrugged in front of me, because I would love to cite direct quotes. In point of fact, you've missed the mark on what Ayn Rand was talking about, by such a wide margin, I am stunned. The direct comparisons that can be drawn between the book and this topic are so obvious it's incomprehensible. I'm going to try to get my hands on a copy shortly, so I can go back and revise this post. Finally, trickle down economics is the direct opposite of this situation. Trickle down economics state that a reduced tax burden on the rich, will be passed on to consumers through the costs of goods and services bought. This would be trickle up economics, because it's theoretically giving means to the poor, in order to produce greater wealth for the rich, in that they will be producing a larger volume of logs, thereby reducing the cost of logs. -

You do realize that this will harm the people who rely on selling rune axes and dragon stone jewelry for money? By giving these items freely, the prices will drop, making it even harder to make a living by these means. This is classic Communism, and it does more harm than good. The determined people are penalized, while those who aren't pulling their own weight are rewarded. Why should anyone pull their own weight when they can receive valuable items with no effort whatsoever? Ultimately this system collapses because of just that reason. We need to take steps to reward the hardest workers, not the most needy. By giving incentive to the best, it encourages everyone to ascend to greatness. Suggested reading: "Atlas Shrugged" by Ayn Rand -
I think player movement would be much better if it was controlled with WASD, like many other games. That wouldn't increase the ease by which skills are leveled, it would just be more user friendly in my opinion. I don't really see why there would be any objection other than fear of change, but it could easily be implemented while retaining the current movement system.

I Will Help You If I Can: Combatting the Greed Factor

Here's an example of what I like to do. If I'm selling a lower level their first set of rune and I notice they have no amulet, I'll throw in a free strength amulet. I recall going quite a long time with no idea that amulets gave any bonus so I like to help people in that regard. In this sort of situation, they are clearly not begging, and have worked hard to get their rune set, I'm just throwing in a little bonus. I do not give out free amulets though. On one occassion I met a person while cutting yews. They were using an iron axe and when I queried them about it, they said they had recently been hacked, and were just trying to cut yews to afford some of their previous items again. Partially because I was in an extremely gregarious mood, and partially in sympathy to their plight, I went and smithed a rune axe to give them free. I was in no way condescending these sorts of acts of kindness, because they are rewarding people who are working to earn their belongings. Giving out items to random people on the other hand, is rewarding people who may not have made any attempt to better themselves, and this is where I draw the line. -

I disagree. A full kit of iron armour means that the newbs go into battle against those lvl5 goblins as a more than even match. Meaning they're not as likely to die and lose everything and end up begging for a new tinderbox on the lumby steps. Giving someone who just started a set of iron is a different matter. In that case you're giving them a tool to earn money with. Giving some lvl 30 pker a set of mage robes and amulet is like throwing money into a bottomless pit. They're just going to go squander it and come back begging for more. -

That's like feeding wild animals at the park. They're just going to become dependent on handouts, and become even less capable of supporting themselves. Welfare only propogates more begging. You may be well meaning, but you're not helping people by giving them charity. I know I would find it demeaning to be offered free items. I take pride in knowing that I've earned every gp in my account and the players who genuinely aren't beggers will share that view. As for those who are beggers, this will only validate their begging by demonstrating it is rewarded. It comes down to the old addage, give a man a fish etc. Anybody can produce wealth in runescape with a degree of patience. There is nothing stopping any player from earning gp and obtaining valuable items on their own. A player in need would be better served to be shown a good fishing spot, rather than given free swordfish. -
I thought I was just going crazy. This happened to me numerous times last night, and my pking friends were quite mad that I was just standing around looking at people run away. Apparently you have to be close enough to hit a running opponent without advancing towards them. In other words, ranging is totally screwed up for pking right now and will hopefully be fixed next update.

Yew cutting : fastest money maker skill in f2p? I think not.
Lim_Dul replied to a topic in General Discussion
Rune mining blows both of those away. This morning I mined just a tick over 4 hours and got 111 rune ore. 111 x 12k = 1332k. Then divide that by four hours and you get 333k per hour. This was actually my personal record for most efficient rune mining because I was trying a couple new strategies. My previous conservative estimates were still above 250k per hour for rune mining. Granted I have the advantage of scaring pkers off simply with my combat level, but I only encountered pkers on about 4 occasions. Also I was using an addy pick, because I'm so cheap  -
I was pretty sure they fixed this last month. There was a while you would not stand still to range at all, but now I'm having no problems of this sort. The only thing I can think of is are you trying to range over the fences in barbarian village? I'm not certain, but I don't think you can range over the new fences like the old ones.

what did you do when you first played runescape...
Lim_Dul replied to upsilon5's topic in General Discussion
Oh I forgot about that. I was really excited when I got my first goblin armor drop. I was sure I'd be able to wear it, total bummer. Best runescape quote I've heard in a long time  -
If you could take 1 thing from p2p and give it to f2p..

Cannonballs. That way there would be a profitable item to smith in F2p. But honestly, I wouldn't add anything if I could. -

It's hilarious to look back at how I first started. The things I didn't know are amazing. I remember I was scared to walk across the bridge in lumbridge for fear the goblins would overpower me  But later on, I had a big money making scheme. Brace yourselves for this. I crafted like 600 holy symbols, strung them with wool I sheared and spun myself, and that's when I found out about blessed holy symbols. I didn't have 31 prayer at the time, so I gave some guy 10k (at the time I had like 13k total gp) to bless my symbols for me. After this I began to sell the symbols to the store, not realizing the store didn't give you the full price for each one you sold. Don't even get me started on my bowl crafting and stew making exploits  -
What do you think are the best ways of making money on F2P?
Lim_Dul replied to hazardmaster's topic in General Discussion
I've mined over 100 rune ore in a day on numerous occassions. Selling those for 12k each that's 1.2m in a day. If you buy coal and natures and smelt rune bars you can gain some additional mage and smith xp and get 14k a piece. I'm currently extremely broke, so I've decided next month I'm going to do a rune mineathon with the goal of 100m gp. Wish me luck :D -
Nice skills for seven months, great job. The lesson learned here, don't trust people any farther than you can throw them. Since you can't actually throw people you meet via runescape, don't trust them at all. Some people just love to swindle and steal, because they're so worthless they aren't willing to earn an honest living. It's sad to see one of the hard-working decent players leaving, as a result of these bottom-dwelling lowlifes. Good luck with your studies :)

I thought the exact same thing as soon as I read that. As I demonstrated in the mendark 9 thread, members on average have 3.14 times the xp of nonmembers (based on the average of the top 100 nonmembers and members). So in essence members are buying their way to success, or at least, their accounts are 1/3rd equivelent of f2p work and 2/3rds purchased success. Yes, Jagex did contradict themselves, and I wish they'd reckognize the contradiction. Though it's a bit late to remove the easy xp p2p updates, it's ok though. I can always join members after I get my 15 f2p 99s

I once witnessed a guy get two genies, simultaneously. It was at the moss giants in varrock sewer, they appeared within about 5 seconds of one another. Talk about lucky :o
