You can escape him, just go behind the pillar, wait for him to get his full health back, then go to the entrance while staying close to the walls. That way, nomad will not be on you, and you can escape the fight.

Finally completed the quest :S Took me 15 tries.. and 3 million in supplies..

It's just a new type of currency merchants came up with. Just think about real life money, it's just paper, but has a lot of worth. If every merchant regard mint cakes to have a lot of value, then it can be used as currency.
