you need a workbench. Different workbenches craft higher lvled items.

there is a problem in runescape; the worthlessness of gold bars. They sell for about 150 gp ea, in bulk, on the official forums. If there was something to do with the excess gold bars, it could make smithing more profitable, and help runescape overall.

don't let lvl 9 wilderness scare you; I've trained from 40-50 there and I have never seen anyone, besides the wizards. However, if you are that scared, there are some wizards south of varrock. Just watch out for the lvl 20's.
