i would proboblty listen to "the melvins", they were basically the band invented grunge (kurt cobain holds them very highly) but they have ALOT of cd's, so i would recomend either houdini or stoner witch

A list of free program I can think of off the top of my head: Gimp Blender paint.NET Graphics Gale Terragen 3D Canvas And these are just a few of what the internet has to offer.. Go get them, use them, and don't use that old excuse.. true but ms paint is alot easyer to use then most of them, (or at least in my experience)
