This is half true, sometimes he attacks straight away and sometimes he waits till you can see him. I've tried a few times recently first time he waited till i saw and second time he atted with mage straight away before he was on the screen, And as for the checkpoints, they are pretty much useless on waves 31+ because the 360's will get you before you have time to put prayer on, it's still quite hard to obtain it.
