It's impossible to split the larger granites to make 500g's. About that banking, there's a way of banking that's faster than Sunny's. You bank at Castle Wars and you use a Camulet (Quest reward from Enahkra's Lament (sp?)). The Camulet teleports you to a temple, after going up a few ladders you'll be 2 clicks away from the mine, which is way faster than banking at shantay pass and running back there.
