My theory is that RCing is used to make money, but a more promising opputunity in pure essecnce in the great orb project was a more appealing prospect. It also gives a medium difficulty goal for f2p'ers to get to the 50 RC requirement because of the fact that training RC is just plain BORING (I recently mined 17K rune ess just to get enough for crafting my way to 50RC :D )
