For Firefox: Type about:config in the address bar and change the browser.backspace_action to one fo the following... 0 = Pressing [backspace] will go back a page in the session history and [shift]+[backspace] will go forward. 1 = Pressing [backspace] will scroll up a page in the current document and [shift]+[backspace] will scroll down. (Other) = Any other integer value will simply unmap the backspace key.

I belive its because when RS2 was being developed there not no universal midi player library for java so they used an IE only version to get sounds in the game. They unfortunatly havn't changed the code since the new version of java which has its built in library now for playing music.
