How about we set this as 50 years in the future of the second Hegemony, just storyline wise. And I think we should just have land battles work like they did always, with a mod doing the work, and the people giving their troop movements. Also, I think people should have to figure out how to land their own troops. Drop pods would be possible with some way to slow them down, maybe nanofiber parachutes?

Impossible and pointless. One, the army will have taken them. Two, you could use it for maybe a day. Tanks get about 2mpg with JET FUEL. Good luck finding that. Tanks need to be followed by support crews (or have them nearby) for repairs nearly daily. Plus, it's not like driving a car, it's much more complicated. Why would you want to anyway? Here's an idea me and a friend had. Trains. Go to a trainyard, siphon all the diesel out of the engines except for one, put the diesel into barrels. Put all the barrels in a train car, then fill another car with supplies (or two cars if you have alot). Then move the rest of the train onto an unused track, and disconnect it, then you can travel along the train tracks til you get to the next trainyard, where you can refill the fuel tanks from other trains. Worst case scenario, you run out of fuel, and have a pretty decent area to live for a bit.

You can't aim while duel wielding, atleast not effectively. You have point and shoot accuracy, but not actual aiming. A body shot would be possible, a headshot at even 30 feet would be near impossible. Also, it would be stupid. Dual wielding is literally just a concept from video games and movies, that serves nearly 0 purpose in real life. Also, if you can't fix a jam, then you have an issue. Good luck finding a P90 by the way, and more than a few magazines for it. As for shotguns, video games give them a bad rap in terms of range. They are effective at a lot longer ranges than you think, atleast against people. Plus, if you have slugs, that makes them into a rifle, essentially. Ok, so here's my plan, currently. Atleast, this is the one I have if I'm at home at the time. First, get the following things from my my house, and put them into my car (SUV, great at off roading). 1: Empty the cabinet with our non perishables, and also take one of the barrels filled with water in our basement that we have for emergencies. 2: Crowbar, brass knuckles, trench knife, sledgehammer, axe, chainsaw (Not useful against zombies, but it can be useful for practical purposes, and scaring the [cabbage] out of people). 3: All the gas we have, probably 10 gallons total (for various power tools) 4: Money. 5:Various survival guides, and books, and small board games. Throw in my guitar if there's enough room in the car. 6: Various survival gear (water purification tablets, solar blanket, large backpack, etc.) Ok, then, I drive to my friend's house, her dad has quite a few guns, and we both live in isolated (but close) areas. I should be able to make it there without going on any major roads, and if the roads are jammed, I can go off road pretty easily. Once I'm at my friends house, we take her guns, two pump action shotguns, a lever action rifle, and two 1911's. Last I saw, her dad had around 10 boxes (25 shells ea) for the shotguns, and then maybe 5 30-30 for the lever, and then a few hundred rounds each. Really close to her house is a huge military firing range, and if the military isn't there or has been called away, we might be able to get some guns (including assault rifles, and I know they have a few miniguns there) They live next to a farm, so we get seeds from the farm, or if nothing else, stock up on food. We take 2 cars, so we can carry more, and take similar things from her house as we did from mine. We go to another friends house, who's in a more suburban area, but not TOO populated. She has two boats, we take them out to an island on the Lake, and set up camp there. (There's a semi-abandoned house there, we can live there). From there, we have enough food to last a while, and if possible, we plant potatoes and such, which are very easy to grow. We can raid/scavenge the shoreline with the boats, and since one is a sailboat we don't need to worry about fuel.

Can we put some limits on orbital bombardment, because I think land battles are more fun then space. On land, you have to use some strategy, in space you don't, it's basically just numbers. Also, how about like in the hegemony's second thread, the first post is a giant knowledge base type thing, with maps. And since there are only a few systems, we have it organized from the start, including planetary maps.

No, but if a guy 200 yards away is shooting at me, then yes. No it wouldn't, a bastardized .50ae won't kill a zombie any more than a .45acp. And no they wouldn't. Low accuracy, and dual wielding is beyond pointless.

I still don't understand why you care about anything greater than medium range. Any more than that really isn't a threat to you. Against people, for example. Also, .22 against people won't do [cabbage]. Umm, .22 is less accurate than large calibers except up close. I guess that's enough reason to stay away from that as a primary.
-
Tanks require massive support crews. You'd need repairs every day of use, and tons of fuel. A truck would be better, or armored car. .22 or even .17hmr aren't that great, because at long ranges they probably wouldn't pierce the skull. However, they do have their place, .22lr rifles could be used at medium range, an also be pretty useful for practicing shooting. Don't confuse .22lr and .223 by the way, .223 is the civilian version of 5.56x45.

How about this for starting: If we're not gonna start on earth, we each start with the same technology of the United States in modern times. Then, we also get one slow, weak, unarmored space ship each to start, and the technology to build them. If you're aliens, you get essentially the same technology, with modifications for you're race (ie: you can fit in the cars, their not designed for humans) This way we all start 100% evenly. Then, if you're playing humans, you pick a country, and you have that country's culture (not their wealth level etc. just their culture). If you're an alien race, you have to explain you're culture in detail.

Silencers are good because they make guns quieter. Go outside, into some place like the woods. Now, imagine zombies going after every single sound. That doesn't make any sense, whatsoever. Their instincts probably would tell them to go after human sounds, or atleast animal sounds. A silencer will make the area in which zombies can hear you a lot smaller. Also, if there are raiders, scavengers, etc. around, it makes it much less likely they'll hear you're gunfire. If nothing else, it can reduce recoil too. Someone mentioned the beowulf. That would be the worst choice ever. For a start, I don't think anyone here really understands what a .50 is. For a start, here's a comparison of the .50 Beowulf (what that shoots) and what a m16 (or m4, or m249, or g36, scar L, etc.) http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/c/c7/Beowulf_Cartridges.JPG/320px-Beowulf_Cartridges.JPG. .50 is just the diameter of the bullet, and not all .50's are the same. Here's a .50 bmg, the most famous .50 cal cartridge, fired from the M2, and "Barrett 50 cal (really m82). http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/8/84/Rifle_cartridge_comparison_w_scale.png/300px-Rifle_cartridge_comparison_w_scale.png Notice the round second from the right is the 5.56, the one the .50 beowulf was compared to. Now, lastly, good luck finding ANY .50 cal bullets of any type. Most need to be special ordered through catalogs or the internet. In any case, larger caliber doesn't mean better. It means way more recoil, and sorer shoulders and wrists. For example, during Vietnam (I think) one of the standard rifles was the m14, which at the time was fully automatic with 7.62x51 rounds. They found soldiers were completely unable to fire them accurately after the first shot, so that's why they modifed them to be only possible to fire in semi. That's also why even on a smaller round, the 5.56, modern m16's can only be fire in bursts or semi, because it's near impossible to hit anything on full auto except at very close range. The only real use of full auto is suppressive fire, and that doesn't work against zombies. Anyways, higher caliber means, in general, less availability, more weight, more recoil, and louder noise.

For the apocalypse, the best weapons would be: Ak-47 M4 Ruger Mini 14 Then either a .357 revolver, or a .45 or 9mm pistol. Reasoning: Ak-47: Rugged, reliable. Very common ammunition. Powerful. Easy to fix. M4: Light. Accurate (ish), very common ammunition. Easyish to find parts for at military bases. Ruger: Accurate. Assault rifles are superior to semi and bolt, if you're not a [wagon]. Why? 1) Humans are more dangerous than zombies. If you fight a raider, you don't want a bolt action. 2) I know it's not recommended, but backed against a wall with them a second away, you'll kill more firing in bursts without much aiming than precise single shots. 3) Generally larger magazines. 4) More customization (Good luck finding one, but you can get an underbarrel shotgun for an m4) Now then, each gun serves a purpose. A sniper rifle is probably better bolt action, simply because jamming is less likely. A shotgun is usually better pump, since it regulates your ROF, and is more reliable and common. For pistols, you can either have around a 17 round clip (9mm glock) or a 6 (or 8 if you're very lucky) round 100% reliable revolver. Both 357, 9mm, and .45 acp are all very common. In my opinion, I'd prefer the following guns for the following roles: Sniper: Primary: Ruger Mini 14 Secondary: Colt 1911 Scavenger (should work in atleast groups of two) Primaries: Benneli m4 or Remington 870, and (person 2) Ak variant or m4.

Well, just because there can be enough food, doesn't mean that growth rates will be infinity. That means that like 20% of the population are useless, no matter what.
-
Ah, I thought we were all starting on Earth as usual. Must have missed that somewhere. Oh, and one thing about you're system was off, each farmer should support WAY more than 4 people, in real life each supports like 130 people. I don't like starting on our own planet. I like starting smaller, and moving on to larger scale.
-
Here's why I want less planets: More planets=More resources than we can ever possibly use. Conflict over resources is a fun part of the game. Sitting, and expanding constantly and never having a reason to fight, is not. How about this, there're two wormholes half a lightyear from each system, each of them going to one of the other systems. Then no FTL other than that, and no other wormholes EVER. I want planets to be something to fight over, not a virtually endless supply. Maybe 2 habitable planets in each of the systems (other than sol), then just the rest like mars, venus, the gas planets, and maybe some terraformable moons.
-
Well, in all likelihood doing it the way we did last time would take more energy than to power the universe. Lets just have one research set it stone, we ignore how far away the systems are. First tier, 12 years to go from one system to another Second, 6 Third, 4 Final, 2 Each takes 10 days to research. And having Sol is good, it means we have a reasonable place to start on that we all know. And if someone really wants earth, they can have it.
-
Here's my suggestion, if we do a space themed game, or one that will eventually include space. Only 3 solar systems, so: Sol, and then two others with habitable planets. That way land no longer is meaningless, and we can all actually remember where the hell systems are. I suggest Alpha Centauri and then the next closest system. FTL is banned, though with enough research you can reach 99.9% of light, or close. For what it's worth, without the Norwegians, Britain/Coastal Europe wouldn't have all of it's castles, and ancient static defenses. Who knows, the Ottomans might have conquered more of Europe if not for that, in some way.

I'm gonna reread some of this thread, and then based on what I found most fun and least fun about the last hegemonies. And then, of course, you all can comment on the rules and we can change them.
-
Well eventually I have some plans to help limit that even further. Well, one good thing is subs are pretty much immune to icbm's.
-
Well, some of the ships are dedicated missile defense ships, and there are enough ships that they won't all get hit, especially if they're moving.

Ah god I love being in the Americas. All I have to worry about is Sere, basically. Uh, in other news the Brazilian Navy is complete, and it's slowing down production dramatically. After the Retech conflict, I think I have the strongest navy. More Mouse and Tiger Choppers are being built, and they are being improved as well. All projects other than CAD and ongoing projects are completed, I think. Project N-Arm starts. 5 years. Project N continues, ongoing.
-
I'm pretty sure a bunch of people are still fine with playing. Don't see why we can't continue seeing as the whole retech thing never happened.
-
How about if he tests it in an a very large environment that takes everything into account for 10 years with no problems, it's ok. 1 year of testing is far too low, I agree.

Project Future is getting a bigger chunk of my budget as of now. Also, after adapting to the changes, we now have more than enough food for everyone, and also more people in the country are growing and storing extra food, mostly potatoes due to their ability to be stored easily, should other crops fail again. Also, levees, and more people buying heaters, warmer clothing and just adapting in general have lead to death rates falling. We are back to rising, if only just barely.

I don't think it matters. Either way, in this game, one branch of my army is specifically designed to function without needing advanced tech, such as exosuits. The only vehicles they use are hardened against EMP aswell. Then the most technologically powerful branch of my military is more focused around the materials they use in their armor, and the quality of their guns, than electric powered stuff. But I doubt EMP will be used too much in this game, since nukes are hard to come by. Oh, and even with the lowered gdp increase rates, my GDP is now around 8.4T, giving me an average GDP of 19k per person. I still think my gdp increase rate should be higher, as I'm not a first world country still, technically. Also, it should be noted that Exosuits should not be able to move THAT fast, no more than 30 miles per hour at max (and then that would drain a lot of their power). The human inside the suit's joints would deteriorate so fast that they would be blobs by the time they got out of their suits. Also, a biped going that fast would probably trip pretty fast. Project Tracks has begun.
-
Thank god, in the last game they cost like 80k each, and no one else agreed that was ridiculous.

The one in Chile was 8.8 I think, if it matters. And oops, I meant Columbian, as in one of the former US factions, the one Texas is fighting. Though we won't land unless they give us permission, I guess.
