Incredibly Slow computer issue (system restore problem)

Featured Replies

Hi all,

The last 2 days my computer has been incredibly slow and sluggish any many programs have been crashing or just taking a very long time to load.

I have not installed or downloaded anything new for several days possibly weeks. I have run a full anti virus scan as well as spybot/adaware and checked a HJT log.

I have tried to do a System Restore to a few days ago to try to fic the problem but everytime I do it, it fails. After searching Google someone said it could possibly be Norton which is causing the restore to fail as part of its system protection. I have followed all instructions on disabling product protection and auto protect and the restore always fails.

I have also tried several other dates to restore to both in normal mode and also in safe mode.

Anyone got any ideas?

Are all the fans working (I assume its a pc but if its a laptop this is even more important), because a hot computer runs noticably slower, I know this from personal experiance with my laptop which can't run Runescape when its runnign hot. Or has anything else changed that would make your computer hotter than normal? If noty than you might have a program running in the background that takes up alot of your proccesor, or i suppose to much RAM.

My computer is water cooled and is well within normal operating temperatures and the processor is not running at high capacity. :(

i have the same problem with my old computer

i erased the hard drive and installed windows and after that it just slowed down...

New Sig Coming soon!

Let's start with the obvious. Have you tried running a defrag?

I would try a scandisk just to rule out a bad hard drive. Also, use the program memtest86 to scan for memory errors.

Your problem was probably because you didn't install the right drivers.

Will run memtest shortly.

I would think it would be ESP or incompatible hardware/drivers.

For trying to get the system restore working I would guess it would be caused by:

SR is not running

a locked/system file

corrupt restore file

changes made from another OS

improper shutdown

SR is not running

you can also try disabling SR then enabling it, but you will loose all your previous restore points. (control panel, system, system restore)

Have you tried retracing your steps on the day before this happened to make sure you didn't do anything that might have complications?

With regards to System Restore all I can think of it a corrupted restore folder. If I turn it off/on again then i'll lose all previous restore points. If the problem with my slow computer isnt then fixed i'll have no opportunity to revert. Could the corrupted SR cause the slowdown of my computer alone?

I would think it would be possible but unlikely mostly because many people get that unable to restore message but it does not cause this problem for them.

Another thing that you could check is for leaking, corroded or bulging capacitors/anything out of the ordinary.

The Following is a text about ESD from http://www.smartcomputing.com/editorial ... .asp&guid=

Signs Of Trouble. Because an ESD can cause damage even when you don't feel a shock, problems from static electricity are difficult to detect. It is important to note that your computer is most susceptible when you remove the case. With the case removed, a shock or pop when you touch an internal component is an obvious source of concern. However, a low-level ESD may only impair the component, resulting in latent damage rather than total failure.

A component with latent damage from ESD can cause your computer to suffer from intermittent crashes, resets, data loss, and other irregularities. Moreover, these problems are symptomatic of a variety of other causes, such as power supply issues, overheating, and insufficient memory resources.

Well System restore didn't fix the problem, and neither did running Chckdsk.

Programs are hanging, crashing or just taking about 10 minutes to load. Ctrl Alt Del does nothing. I'm pretty sure its a memory problem now as theres definitly no capasitors leaking. When I finish work tonight ill take out a stick one at a time to see if that fixes things :(

u could try right clicking my computer, goin to properties advanced, performance settings, advanded then clicking change under virtual memory.

then select no paging file and click set. that should make ur computer run faster.,

u could also try stopping ur services cos u dont need them for most things..

Don't do this.

Windows need a paging file to run properly or your computer will be slower. People can only disable the page file if you are running more than 2gb of ram.

Mercifull did you try using Memtest as I suggested? Leave in running for a couple hours or so. If you can, leave it running over night.

I left it running the whole time I left for work from about 7:45 until about 5:15 when I got home and it was fine.

I took out one of the RAM sticks and turned the PC on and it appears to be going ok I think. It hasn't hung or anything so far but I will keep using my computer as usual to see if it does it again.

This is all very strange indeed. :-k

Notepad seems to be taking a long time to load...

Time to try taking out one of the other RAM sticks?

When taking out the ram sticks only run with 1 ram stick in at once. Then keep swapping that single one out.

If Memtest didn't find an error I don't think it would be the ram :? . Although it wouldn't hurt to try swapping ram sticks just to be on the safe side.

perhaps you could find a spare HDD or a friends that already has Windows on it and the same interface and see if the problem still occurs. You could try Linux if you don't have that option but i would think it may react differently to the same problem but on a different OS. Then this may tell you if it is a hardware or a software problem.

I think i might just end up putting up with it for a few more weeks. Getting a new pc soon anyway.

Ctrl alt del and look at what takes up all the CPU. When I was setting up a second computer in my friends home, he had the same problem. It ended up being some buggy program eating up all the CPU.

Check ;)

CPU is at 5-12%. There is nothing running that is sucking up all the CPU power. :(

Have you done any kind of hard drive diagnostics, looked at SMART values (speedfan can pull SMART data), and so on? I know you said you're getting a new rig soon but it's always worth troubleshooting to have a second machine to play with. :P

I am getting a new one but I don't want to scrap this one, its still a pretty good PC and my parents will be happy using it.

I'm kinda at my wits end right now and without another hard drive to test with I still don't know if its a hardware or software issue. :(
