Do we place too much emphasis on combat level?

I do judge people by combat, unless they have 90+ in other skills.

Since combat is shown, then people naturally rate them by it. I would love an option to make yourself a custom examine, then people could put in skill total!

Its not really the stats I use as a base to give out respect, but more so their personality. I met a level 3 about a year ago, and I respected him tons for his humor. I gave him many things, showed him around, and even bought him full rune when he reached 40 def. He still plays and now hes a higher combat than me, and he bought me a santa hat when I was hacked.

Years ago, when Runescape first started, there wasn't even a way to see your combat level. You could only see the stats. Therefore, there was never anyone walking around asking your combat level, but your fighting stats instead. Eventually the wilderness came out, and people could finally have others read them their combat levels. Shortly after that, in your skills menu, your combat level was displayed for you to see. Nowadays, as you all know, everyone can see your combat level.

Sorry for the history lesson, but I wanted to show that ever since Runescape began, people were judging others by combat stats. The reason for it?

Green means you have a high chance of defeating an enemy

Yellow means you have a medium chance of defeating an enemy

Red means you have a low chance of defeating an enemy

These were the descriptions of the colors you saw when you moused over a monster. I believe these were in the combat guide when Runescape started... may still be... I haven't checked. Anyways, if you don't understand the point I am getting at, it is that combat level has always shown you can defeat another player easily or they could beat you. Now I know a lot of you are gonna say well a level 40 can beat a level 50 sometimes, but that isn't my point. Seeing that someone is green to that person tells them that they can defeat that someone which makes them think they are better than that someone. This gives that lower level person the title "noob" to the higher level person.

Okay, I am done with that part of the speech, now my point. Being able to defeat someone or something makes that person think they are higher up in the chain. This is why so much emphasis is put on combat. You cannot defeat a person by cooking lobster while they are still learning how to cook. You cannot defeat someone by smithing better armour. But when you think about it, food helps you to defeat someone, and armour and weapons help you defeat people. Fishing and cooking get you food to heal, mining and smithing supply armour and weapons for fighting, herblaw provides potions to make you more powerful or heal you, fletching and runecrafting both provide equipment for magic and ranging as mining and smithing do for melee, and crafting provides items that can boost weapons power and accuracy and such. What I am saying is that in a very clear way, nearly all of the other stats reflect your combat and ability to defeat someone else. By having a higher combat level your other levels which revolve around combat are presumed to be high, whether they are or not. So when you think about it, naturally, when you have a higher combat level, your other stats will be assumed high, and when you have a lower combat level, your other stats will be assumed low. I agree that combat is not what people should be judged on, but it is because the other stats CAN play a role in what your combat level is, that combat levels are what people are judged on.

Every stat is a piece that, when all put together, gives you a combat level. It is as simple as that. Some people hate it, others like it. As long as the other skills are only playing little pieces in your combat level, combat levels will always be the way people are judged.

If only it could be so. But I suppose that Jagex would then be burdened with the problem in the examination 'descriptions' that we see so often in usernames: vulgar/explicit/racist/etc.

For that reason alone, I doubt we will ever see this idea a reality. But I certainly would like it as well.

I don't think so... tho skill total in reality is better then combat, you don't see people having "fishing match" to see who is the best place, u see dms.

Combat is what proves whose better in the short run, but skill total is shows who is better because they will be wearing the blue phat with dragon sq, and more money then the higher level will ever see

  • 1 year later...

Personally, I tend to judge people more on their actions and what they say. I sometimes will be able to look at a person and say "Oh, they've got full dragon, so they probably know a lot about making money in this game, etc etc."

However, I am combat 95, so I know being high combat doesn't make you a god. Therefor, I also know that being a high level doesn't automaticcaly exempt you from being "a noob." If there wasn't the whole "do not name" policy here, I'd tell you right off the bat of a few level 117 and 116 noobs I know from my experience woodcutting...they're worse than most level 3's I see on the street in f2p.

Yes, most people in general probably do think less of a person if they have a low combat level, since combat levels gives a rough idea of how long and experienced a player is. If players could see skill total then it'd be a different story, but since combat levels are the first thing you can judge a player by most people seem to think low combat level= noob/newbie

i started a thread on suggestions called "examine player option" if anyone want to post ideas on that.

but back to the point, i often ask people what their total level is as i always find that's a better level to judge people. I am combat 77, total level 1195 ( which I think is pretty good for my combat). However, i am trying to keep my combat level down as much as possibe to avoid being pked at low level wildy/abyss. I always get annoyed when i go up a combat level. Makes killing green drags in wildy that much harder.

You are such a liar. The only people currently who are at/over the 1995 skill level total are Zezima, The Old Nite, Lilyuffie88, Kale Stille, Uloveme, Thehate, and S1acker...and they are ALL at least Combat Level 125.

Besides...I think it's pretty much impossible to be level 77 with a 1995 skill total. I could be wrong...but I'm sure I'm not staking a complete stab in the dark on that one.

I've been playing almost 3 years, and I'm combat 90. Some people get like level 100 in almost half a year, AND have more skill total than me.

The people that are higher level than me and have played only half a year call me a nerd because I have been playing longer than them. If anyone is a nerd it's them, because they play more during the day than I do. That's off-topic, but by definition, even a level 60 isn't a noob if they've been playing 2 years.

Combat lvl means nothing if you are passive or just train other skills.

It is also non effective for you to judge on total scores because some people just wander arounf runescape with a small team of noobs that follow them where ever they go. This stops others getting annoyed helps the noobs

Well I knew you wouldn't agree. I know how you hate facing facts.

Ditto! A level 100 asked me for "free stoof" today. Really.

Wow, we bumped a year old topic :) I'm surprised I didn't post on it before...
