D-scimmy in Maya

Done in maya 8.5. This isnt done but is not a WIP since i dont really have time to finish. Now for those who wanna know in detail (if you dont go directly to the pic =D), this was very low tri count until i started trimming and adding details (mainly around the edges), then it shot up to around 2800 tris :shock: . The scimmy is basic color assignment (not textured), and i quickly added 2 spotlights with one casting the scimmy's shadow. Refrence used was inventory pic of d scimmy. Finally, the wood is just a basic texture that came with maya, wrapped around a giant cube :lol: the little tear i have no idea how to fix. If anyone wants i can post a wireframe render.

This is my first model in almost a year, so dont be too harsh with the CC.

 

Also, theres only so much one can do with 3 hours of online video training (lol), i got highschool so theres no time for me to even think about learning this in depth (right now). Anyways hope you like :thumbsup: .

 

 

 

BTW for those technically challenged, this is a 3d model, meaning it can be rotated around and stuff using maya.

I have both and despite what i hear, i found that Maya is MUCH easier and more comftorble to use, as for modelling, comparing both the latest versions, their capabilities are almost equal. Max has a bit more features, but maya is easier to use and it's renderer is better.

the green wire frame next to the scimmy is the texture box, I think you size it to change size of texture and stuff. Didnt touch it tho as the texture looked fine.

One word...Blender.

 

Its is the good as or better than 3DS or Maya

 

and to top it off it is completely free.

 

Probably the only down side to it is that it has a pretty steep learning curve.... but once you learn it you can make what you made in like 5 minutes.

Hey, guess what? Piss off. If he wants you to talk about how Blender is better than Maya (it isn't), then he'll ask you to. If you're just going to spam about it, do it in another thread.

 

 

 

On-topic: Not a very good render. Here are a few points on sword construction you may want to know about:

 

 

 

Hilt - A sword with a blade as curved as a scimitar shouldn't have a perfectly straight grip. In fact, it should almost form a lopsided S shape relative to the blade, in order to balance the weapon while swinging. The crossguard should also be accordingly asymmetrical. Also, it lacks a pommel.

 

 

 

Blade - It's too thick. That is the sort of blade you want to see on a glaive or a cleaver, not a scimitar. Make it thinner. It should realistically be able to have a smooth transition from the tang to the blade itself, which means it shouldn't be much thicker than the grip. It doesn't look particularly sharp, either. In fact, it looks like a flattened red banana.

 

 

 

Try looking at reference pictures first next time. Relying on Runescape for graphical representations isn't a good idea.

in case you havent noticed, we dont want him to feel bad or we would flame him. what we do is CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICS if he does listen or not its not our problem

 

 

 

first melter says he wants cc, and then he complains that someone pointed out that the scim needs texture, which is true. there is no sharp edge and it doesnt reflect light like metal would normally do.

Zonorhc, gimme a better reference picture of a runescape scimitar and ill see what i can do :P .

 

 

 

As for the CC, I said in my post i have not textured it at all, yet people are telling me how i didnt texture it enough. for the last time: There-Is-No-Texture-Applied-To-This-Render-AT-ALL.

I never said I did not like it...

 

And also I don't care about getting my post count up. If I did I would make all of my posts on forums that count to boost it up. And If I would of wanted to make him feel bad I would have said some things a lot worse....If i could of came up with any becuase just being able to model sets you pretty high in my standards.

 

 

 

And also I've tried my share of 3D software from 3DS to Maya to some unheard of ones. I was just saying that it would have looked better in Blender for what you were doing. For animation stuff it would be Maya all the way. Like if you were going to make that into a movie or something then it would be great.

 

 

 

Now back on topic.

 

Could you give us an update on what it looks like please?

err... well i was sorta referring more to the runescape version, but nice drawing =D>

 

 

 

BTW, i just upgraded to windows vista and it wiped my whole HDD in the process, so now i lost all my work (again), so i guess ill move on to make something else if i getr the time. :oops:

How is your RAM holding up now that you got Vista? My friends computer lags more becuase of it.

FIrst of, all, im modelling a RUNESCAPE scimmy, so a RUNESCAPE reference would be more appropriate.

 

 

 

As for vista, im lagging a bit more in counter strike source but i suspect it is because of the new laptop my sister got, and she using wifi 24/7. Cant wait for HALO 2 8-)

And since you've been here since 2005, you should well know that I'm not a huge fan of Runescape-based graphics because I find them patently ridiculous and, frankly, a waste of time unless you can actually improve on them by throwing in something original and some degree of believability and realism.

Yes halo 2 is coming out for PC (Windows Vista ONLY, meaning it will not run on XP), and its coming may 8th.

As to the other person, no i dont know you because i just rejoined runescape, and therefore these forums a month ago. Second, if you dont like runescape you shouldnt be on these forums. And finally, dont parade your famousness over the forums, because no one, especially me, cares whatsoever.

 

 

 

And while im at it, criticizing my work for the fact that you dont like what its based on, is totally your opinion, but gives you no right to spam on my thread to change it. if you dont like the style, why dont you model YOUR OWN, if you even can. FYI, modelling is nothing like making fakes or photoshopping, this one model took me half a day to make, so at least admire it for what it is.
