Even if you do curse him, it wears off practically instantaneously. Just make sure you're wearing a full set of metal armor, no magic-boosting amulet, and the Stronghold of Security boots. Not sure if you know this, but even if you fail a spell, you still get the base XP. Since curses don't do damage, you still get all the XP regardless if you fail it or not.
