Bundled up....pencil shading , UPDATED

Featured Replies

This is a no reference drawing in pencil. I did the first version in crosshatching, then scanned it and redid the shading by smoothing out the lines in painter. It is meant to approximate smoother shading with a pencil, but didn't have to alter my original drawing.

Did the hat shading etc in painter using a somewhat graphite like style.

Edit: Finally finished this up with some ear muffs and some reworking.

Um, as I mentioned, no reference....no photo, I just made it up.

I did see the idea for the hat though from someone at the eagles game lol.

sorry.... its tired... i can't see straight... sorry for the asking... and EAGLES! THEY STINK!

  • Author

no problem :) I didn't say I like the Eagles...just said I saw it at the game. lol actually I don't know who I want to win the big game now. I am a chiefs fan anyway. And if not chiefs then vikings.

Painter is based solely around replicating traditional mediums. I use it sparingly so yes i've done char simulations, but I have to admit I have a weakness when it comes to humans. I just have trouble breaking out proportions easily without a reference.

Mostly, however, when doing any digital paintings that aren't emulations I turn to photoshop; it is my native digital medium afterall. When shading I just use large messy blotches of mixed colors and smudge them to where I like them.. adding the sharp reflections and shadows that you find in realism with a 1px brush. Most of my digital paintings don't use but hard-edge circular brushes.

Thats me, atleast.

Sheesh.... talk about the dam picture people :P

I think its pretty good :)

The shading is great and really gives it a realistic look.

I'll have to be negative somewhere so.... the eyes arent perfect :P

What he said. I'd give more CC, but it's 6:33 in the morning before school. :x The left eye is kinda funny, but I know when I draw eyes, theyre nowhere near perfect. Besides that, not too shabby.

Oh and I havent done pencil-like shading on a computer, mainly because its dam tricky to do with a mouse pointer as far as I've tried....

I usually go for playing with things at about 2-3x the resolution they're going to be actually seen at then shrinking them, shading is something I try to avoid when I can but I'd do a sketch and scan it in if it was absolutely necessary....

Much easier to shade stuff on paper :)

It would have been more interesting if you had posted the original version to better compare the effects of the editing, but that pic is very nice. The final product looks actually like it was done completely in oil pastels because of its pasty look. 9.8/10

Sub...you still post here every now and again huh? Good to hear from you.

As for the eyes, yes I had to redo them after messing them up in the painter process :) I am not really satisfied with them either. I might redo some elements when I do the ears etc. Then again..once I lose that initial passion for a piece it can take forever to do that lol.

I will post the original. Meant to do it anyway earlier....my pencil shading is not really where I would like it to be so it is nothing great :) Incidentally I have seen graphite smoother than this. Some of those DA pencilers are NON-HUMAN!!!! But I don't do it overly well :) My devart deviations and scraps have some of my earlier pencil attempts that show some varying shading styles....

Pretty nice,

Lips, chin and nose are very well done. They're usually a bit harder, but you got them down pretty realistically. Eyes, I actually like them. I've noticed very few people have symmetrical eyes. Actually, no one I know.

I don't like the anime-hair though.
