Enable normal users to post polls

Featured Replies

Title is self-explanatory. Idk why this forum doesn't allow normal users to post polls, but I think it should. Looks like 2 yrs ago it did allow it, anyway. There's a lot of topics that have "[poll]" in front of them, hand written of course, then the topic poster just keeps up with the results, kinda bummer and useless knowing there's a perfectly fine poll system that would take care of that, but that isn't even being used <.<

I think before this gets into serious consideration, I think the mods should agree on whether or not they want to add more to their list of things to moderate. If I remember correctly from someone posting about polls previously, polls had mods running all over the place, and sometimes more urgent issues had gotten delayed by a minute or more? Also I heard users bumped their topics with polls?

I do think polls that mods/admins have certified to be posted would be acceptable, because there does seem to be quite a bit of poll topics in general. Yes, this exists, but is rarely used I presume?

Hmm. What if to be able to make polls, the user needs a certain post count? By example, 1000, but it can be anything.

I think this has been discussed numerous times. The end result everyone seems to agree on is that users would give quantity posts, instead of quality post, which I think the admins/mods would like to see more then polls.

Its not a bad suggestion, just the side-effects of it. =S

I was thinking that this would be a good idea, but how can it be 'abused'?

By abused, we mean that you get threads like:

Do you prefer Dragon Scimitar or Abyssal Whip?

What looks cooler: Full Dragon or Full 3rd Age?

What do you prefer: Coke or Sprite?

Which do you visit more often: Varrock or Falador?

Do you like Nike or Converse more?

We're already starting to get more and more poll-type threads. But if we actually enabled the poll feature, people would just vote instead of replying, which decreases the chance of discussion even more.

Right now polls are set up by moderators or administrators when they are necessary (like sig battles in The Gallery subforum and things like that).

But as eyehawk78 said, polls used to be able to be created by regular users. But so many of those pretty much pointless threads were created that the option was taken away. You can still have a poll created for you by contacting a moderator. We'll set one up if we feel it's necessary.

And by taken away - they mean...

Initially (back on scapeboard) you could make polls. It was ok, then came the flood of crap (like what tripis mentioned) so they got taken away for something like two and a half years before another thread was started to get them back.

That worked, entire community got a trial period of like a few weeks or something, if pointless polls weren't spammed around the place they could stay. And behold, after the "trial period" ended, up came the complete crap with a poll attached, so away they went for good.

Sucks but that's what you get when the greater community acts like morons. Simply put - you can always pm a moderator to put a poll into your thread if you believe it's worth it.
