Porcupine is what your describing, phalanx is where the front creates a shield wall as well as hold spears, and the people behind them hold longspears that reach in front of the shield wall.

Some people are like slinkies, normally they are dull, but they always give you a smile

when you push them down a flight of stairs.

Are you referring to when all the soldiers formed a dome with their shields and had the spears poking out? Towards the end of the movie, right before Leonidas throws the spear at Xerces?

Why except for me? I'm just commenting that it's a bloody stupid thing to do in a battle.

You can just sit tight and feel warm and fuzzy inside that I didn't even bother to point out that it is in no way a "strategy".

Have you even watched the movie?

I seriously don't see why it is 'bloody stupid' on their part. They were surrounded. They weren't fighting at the time, and with the countless persian archers and immortals surrounding you, what else is there to do?

Make some 'bloody stupid' dome which prevents me from getting shot from arrows or jumped from any angle. Or stand way out in the open. I'll sleep on that.

Because movies are so accurate, right?

Repeatedly.

Not be out in the open?

Seriously.

You won't get shot.

You also won't be able to see a thing.

With all your bodies pressed up in there, you won't be able to move those spears even if someone came at you. How long can you hold a hoplon over your head?

Give enough time and you wouldn't have any fresh air to breathe.

The enemy doesn't need to shoot you if they can just drown you in bodies. The Persians were good at both.

Seriously, that stunt only worked in the movie because those Spartans were full of Man. I wouldn't even consider using it, even if I managed to blunder into a position where I might need to, because I am not gifted with the sheer amount of Man the 300 Spartans had..

Well said Zonorhc.

I know the formation is not called a porcupine, a porcupine is when the form a circle of spears, not a dome. And on that note, here is a drawing of a macedonian phalanx.

You can't ever find a place that's nice and peaceful, because there isn't any. You may think there is, but once you get there, when you're not looking, somebody'll sneak up and write "(bleep) you" right under your nose. Try it sometime. I think, even, if I ever die, and they stick me in a cemetery, and I have a tombstone and all, it'll say "Holden Caulfield" on it, and then what year I was born and what year I died, and then right under that it'll say "(bleep) you."

Actually, the correct name would be a schiltrom. =D

Bloody excellent maneuver if done properly.

To be specific, they used the Hoplite Phalanx. I am pretty sure it was the Hoplite Phalanx. Correct me if I am wrong.

Read the posts, hes talking about the dome. They used the phalanx when they were in the hot gates.
