What is "Art" ? ||Art Discusion #1|| (New idea)

Art...Its all around us...The sun setting in the evening as its last glimmer up light shines along the horizen,the trees swaying in the breeze. It inspires oneself.

I think you confused art with the force....

You could say that crying is art. Smiling is art. Your emotions are art.

Constipation is art....passing gas..that is art....I know people who get pretty strong emotions when folks do that.

Um, I think we are getting a bit cheesy here. Smiling is not art. The sun setting may be great inspiration for art, or you could say it is God's art, but it is not art either in the traditional sense.

And while fly fishing or tying is AN art in the sense of a skill, trade, difficult nuanced activity, it is not ART in the traditional sense either. Some words have multiple definitions. This is an example.

I consider my fly-tying an art

(u make the flies for fly fishing)

Its anything that you think of and use your mind to make it, like drawings, sculptures, flies :)

wow thats pretty cool sliceman........i've seen guys doing that on TV and it looks hard. that's pretty awesome. and yes i agree.....that IS an art. its a;so very difficult and it clearly requires skill :P

You could say that :wink: just tied a few flies, gotta look to see if the names are sued before i name em with mine :). Its hard but fun, takes time up tho, o well i enjoy using em

hehe.

Anyways, that is true. Now of course, we could realy look at anything as art, but i feel like brining up a point.

Anyways, they had something like this on DA for a while. So i read through it , and someone said "Something that looks good" or something like that.. i think someone may have said it here.

Anyways, Imagine the little boy/girl that creates a picture (that by no means is going to look good) For his/her Mom/Dad (lol).

What i think could be another good definition, is something that you create to try and be visulaly (sp?) / Any other way (hearing wise, ect.) Apealing. You can tie in emotion, but i can truthfully say i don't have a certain emotion in a lot of my peices, like my landscapes. I mostly just try and recreate scenes from my head, and make them look as good as posible.

As i said before, the definition is preaty vauge (sp? I think i got it right) But you get the idea.

And same thing goes for Comerical art, its still trying to get it to look good (with the motivation of getting paid) but you get the idea :D

Yes I meant Gods Art. He is the ultimate artist. He created us and molded us with his own two hands. HIS ART inspires OUR ART. And I believe this was a disscussion about what we think art is. Not in the TRADITIONAL sense, but what we think Art is...I simply said what I think it is...Many People have different Opinions. "Creativity Has No boundaries"

Yes, but it was also a debate thread

So while your opinion is in fact your opinion, he also said to back it up.

I was just being a pain to get a point across anyway :)

I do think that God is the ultimate artist, as anyone finds when they try to emulate any of His works. The detail on just the surface is impossible to capture.

Within human endeavors art is an attempt to copy recognizable subject matter, which is really God's work itself. Therefore, I defined art as an attempt to portray realistic content.

If you want a definition that fits both yours and Nadril's it would be:

"A work meant to be displayed for the pleasure of others. "

But in that case, God's work would go beyond that as it is intended more than for enjoyment.

It is a display of His power:

JOB 38:3 Brace yourself like a man;

I will question you,

and you shall answer me.

JOB 38:4 "Where were you when I laid the earth's foundation?

Tell me, if you understand.

JOB 38:5 Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know!

Who stretched a measuring line across it?

JOB 38:6 On what were its footings set,

or who laid its cornerstone--

JOB 38:7 while the morning stars sang together

and all the angels shouted for joy?

JOB 38:8 "Who shut up the sea behind doors

when it burst forth from the womb,

JOB 38:9 when I made the clouds its garment

and wrapped it in thick darkness,

JOB 38:10 when I fixed limits for it

and set its doors and bars in place,

JOB 38:11 when I said, `This far you may come and no farther;

here is where your proud waves halt'?

JOB 38:12 "Have you ever given orders to the morning,

or shown the dawn its place...?

it is a basis for universal knowledge of God, a proof of His existence, and hence a basis for the judgement:

RO 1:18 The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness, 19 since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. 20 For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities--his eternal power and divine nature--have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.

PS 19:1 The heavens declare the glory of God;

the skies proclaim the work of his hands.

PS 19:2 Day after day they pour forth speech;

night after night they display knowledge.

PS 19:3 There is no speech or language

where their voice is not heard.

PS 19:4 Their voice goes out into all the earth,

their words to the ends of the world.

Therefore I don't consider what God did art. It was beyond that.

You could say then that art is man's faultering attempt to emulate God in the creative experience.

Incidentally, creativity may have no boundaries, but sigs here do. Yours is 55 pixels too wide :)

You have proved me wrong...and I personally like the way You did it! Quoting Scriptures. It was nice talking with you. And you have pointed some things out to me that I had never considered. Thank You for your insight on Art. :D

Your welcome! And thanks for the reminder that I should not use so much sarcasm! lol

EPH 4:29 Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. 30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. 32 Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.

:lol: You just got owned by god :wink:

anyways, great points you have there Tttia, glad to see your getting into the spirit of debating.

So, what do you all think. If i came up with a slightly more "debatable" idea, would it go along well? would you all like something like that? :D

Let's keep religion out of this, eh?

Even in my secular philosophy class at a state funded college religion entered into a discussion of aesthetics. It is hard to keep God out of it. If Merry believes that God has something to do with art, then since this is a debating thread, feel free to debate :)

Last I checked Keiphus is religious himself. So I don't think you are shoving it down his throat.
