Tech Support Needed (Updated! still need help)

Ok I've been having this problem ever since I started college in Sept. 2006. Basically, Runescape is incredibly laggy, despite the fact that we have a pretty strong internet connection. For example, Halo 3 runs perfectly on Xbox Live, but killing Bandits on Runescape has a 5-second delay on every click I make.

It was recently suggested to me that maybe my computer settings are not optimized for playing Runescape. Now I'm studying Mechanical Engineering - I don't know the first thing about computer settings. Can someone help me out please?

Edit:

Yes I am a member, and I play on worlds 58 and 59 while living in Suburban Detroit. I use the downloadable Runescape application from the JAGeX website. I am also using the newest version of Java available. My computer is also protected by Sophos Anti-Virus and a recent scan turned up negative. And yes, I am running Runescape on Low Detail. All I ever do is kill those silly Saradomin-hating-Bandits because anything else requires too much clicking to be an effective use of my time.

Any other suggestions?

Edit (again):

dixdiag as requested:

I can't exactly say about computer settings, but I know what worked for me. Try switching the detail in which you play in. It may sound silly, but I used to lag on Low Detail, and switched to High Detail. The lag was gone once I switched, so I suggest you try it just in case.

Good luck.

I've tried both High and Low Detail, both lag hard - the former worse than the latter.

Serve vs Client lag - I don't know - how can I test? My intution tells me it's server lag, but I don't know enough about either to say one way or the other. How can I test?

You should move this to the Tech and Computers forum.

But I think that you should look at the advertisements above the RS page. Right click them and scroll down to detail then select low. I have noticed that that helps.

The worst part of it is that advertisements aren't affecting him, because he's a member (he said he was killing bandits, right?)

Are you using swiftswitch or a browser and using rs directly? and if you use a browser what operating browser do you use (firefox\opera\IE)?

There are many reasons for the lag, what servers you use, your java, and if you use a wireless router or laptop.

Try a couple things. First of all run a spybot program on your computer. If 360 is working fine then you know internet is fine. So it may be that. Diddy mentioned JAVA. Make sure you have the newest form of java. Also, make sure you donr have to many background programs running. Look at TASK manager and see what you cpu usage is.

 may also try using rs directly as recommended. This is on download section on runescape's offical site in the download's section.

See if these help at all'

58 and 59 are based in Chicago, so that shouldn't be a problem unless there are other major internet problems, so we should be able to rule that out.

You mention running a virus scan but have you run a spyware/malware scan using something like Adaware or SpyBot S&D? Would be a good idea to scan with one or both of those just to rule it out.

What are the machine specs? CPU? RAM? (To view these, go to Start > Control Panel > System )

...Im stumped again....Just scan for spyware with Avast, Hijack this, Spybot, Ad-Aware...

Another thing, does your computer meet the minimum system requirements? Heck, even the recommended? You can go to Start > Run > dxdiag, or if you dont have DirectX, do the method above by Cruiser.

Well, your computer is pretty much optimized for the game. I don't really have another suggestion..but is anything eating away at available RAM? Are you running different applications in the background while playing?

If you're not, try a spyware scan. Hate to say so, but quite a few good anti-viruses dont pick up spyware. Try Spybot-Search and Destroy...or Ad-Aware. If you find a bunch of spyware listings, there you go. Spyware eats away at RAM like no tomorrow.

If you dont have any spyware...I'd just say go to a different server, or make a temporary switch to high detail.
