A recent post about an ex member unwittingly uwielding his crystal shield in favor of a black kite got me thinking. But wear full rune and a whip in F2P, and the whip will protect above everything, despite the fact that it's technically worthless in a free world... trust me, I've personally tried this. Toggling between number of mouse buttons surely messed me up. =P Anyways, when I was a non-member (dates back 2 years ago) equipped with that ring that lets you convince people..ring of something. (gets free boat rides) did work on non-members.
