is it worth it to buy a tablet? i can't afford the 1000 dollars ones, so i'm just considering a standard on for like 80 dollars. Seems like theres only one type. Is it worth it to get the 3x5 inch screen? doesn't seem like that much space to write on.

If not..don't waste the $80..

Even if it's just a hobby, I don't think $80 for a tablet is a waste. WACOM is pretty much the industry standard as far as tablets go... Get one, it's well worth it. :)

My Wacom tablet was 100 bucks...it came with photoshop (elements < ewww) Corel Painter and some other plugin...It came with a screen that has a perfect size for me, and it has 10 or so levels of sensitivity. The name of the tablet: Graphire3

"Bigger" isn't always "Better"; it depends on your stroke length really. You can't go wrong with 80 bucks if you like art in the least bit.. unless the thing just sucks all to hell. Personally, I couldn't do without mine. =P Digital painting is a horrid pain in the [wagon] without one.

Yeah... we have all kinds of sizes at work... most of ours are like 8.5x6 although we do have bigger ones on our compositors...

Just depends... sometimes I do modeling, every once and a while I animate certain elements in a scene. Alot of the times I do rotoscoping for compositing. That basically means that I cut people out of certain scenes and put them in other scenes. Also do rotoscoping to hide 3D elements behind live action... Sometimes I write treatments for project ideas... I do all kinds of things, it just depends. Sometimes I even carry old 3/4" tapes out to the dumpster. :-P

Actually, I draw better with mouse than tablet that I purachsed some time ago. It's very personal, but usually people draw better with tablet (of course). I'm getting used to it with time ;)

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Hell yeah, if you are interested in digital drawing and such, go and buy it! It's great fun/useage if you are really into art.

Well i just bought a tablet today, it has 1024 pressure points and is great fun, im getting used to it, its so much fun :D I am into art so i bought it, i think it cost me bought 100$ as well.

As was mentioned above though you really can't go wrong with a graphire.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

It is cheap (relatively, I know 80 bucks isn't exactly cheap), AND comes with software. People actually paid over 80 bucks for elements 2.0 alone. Now that 3.0 is out it is still not a terrible deal. elements will do most of what ps does and at a fraction of the cost.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The painter version I am not sure about...never used it. The wife has it because she got a graphire, but I already had painter 7 so I didn't bother. but you have to consider the software when you get the hardware. It is a good deal.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The only drawback to the graphire is that it doesn't support TILT!!!!!!!

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

I am so used to tilt with my wacom intuos that I can't quite get the hang of not having it. But it is not really a necessity unless you are doing a lot of wacom airbrush work. And by that I don't mean the air brush tool in ps. They have an actual air brush tool with the dial and all. But it costs more than the tablet itself! I thought of getting it for the wifey since she does some traditional air bruzhing too, but the cost was too much.

Quite possibly. It takes a bit to get used to. And I have seen some inhumanly good mousers too, so if you already have that skill, might as well stick with it. But few do. And if you already do traditional painting or drawing it is essential as the skills transfer nicely.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

I also meant to mention that if you are looking to buy a notebook computer then don't get a tablet. Just get a TABLET PC! It has all the notebook features and you can draw right on the screen and get some great results. All but one or two of the tablet pc's use wacom digitizers anyway.

i got one for christmas. i belive mine is 4x5 and it works fine for me. does what i want it to and thats all that matters......a bigger one it really only for fine details i think, and it gives you more space to move the stylus, but thats really not needed.......unless you're hardcore graphic dude. i say go for it if you want to. its fun to play around with :D

my small one works fine too. The real reason to buy a larger one is

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

a. You want more exercise while you draw

 

 

 

b. you have a really high res display. Remember, the thing keys to your display so if you have a large high res display consider a larger tablet.

 

 

 

c. If you have dual monitors running definitely consider it. Of course then it is a bit odd because dual monitors stretch one axis more than the other.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

As for practicing with them, when the wifey got her's I assigned her to take out backgrounds of photos for me. That kind of work gets you steady quickly.

I doubt that the program itself would. And I am not sure if there is a pocket pc version. However, you might see if you can find a palm emulator...ie a program that allows you to run palm programs....
