Monitor/computer problem

Featured Replies

Okay well, while i'm browsing any site, or even just on MSN messenger, my monitor somewhat shuts off. Well, not shut off, but what it does is turn black as if I havn't touched the computer for a while.

I've done virus scans, spyware scans and all that, checked my property settings, and it's only set to 20 minutes, and what's weird is it does it AS i'm browsing. It's not the specific monitor, as I changed it and it continued to happen.

Anything I can do?

So you changed it andit still happens? That sounds like a graphics card problem. I would first try updating you graphics drivers. Then if that doesn't work your can try using a different graphics card and see if that fixes the problem.

Hmm.. May I ask how?

By the way, it's a new computer. Well, kind of.. A few months old.

When the monitor shuts off, does it say 'No Signal' and you then have to reboot the computer? If that's the case, you mightn't have power going into your Graphics Card, that happened to me.

Otherwise, get the latest Graphics Drivers for your card.

First, find out the card you have.

Many ways to do this.

On XP, just go Control Panel > System > Hardware Tab > Device Manager > Then expand the little '+' sign next to Display Adapters. This will show your Graphics Card.

Now you know the model, go to the Chipset Manufacturers Site

ATI - http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html

nVidia -http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us

Install the drivers and reboot.

It doesn't say No Signal, it's as if the screensaver goes on, except I don't think I have a screensaver set.

Okay, followed your instructions. :)

Product: ATI RADEON XPRESS 200 Series

Current Installed Driver: 0.0

Recommended Driver: Your PC currently has the latest driver installed for your GPU. No driver update is necessary at this time.

Everything appears to be good? But it continues to do it.

It's not frequent though, I guess. Once every 2 hours maybe. Still is annoying, as it shuts off for like, 5 seconds.

We can rule out your monitor since you said you replaced it.

Perhaps the graphics are actually overheating, could be causing the cut outs. Is the temperature in the room particularly warm? Or very dusty?

Even if it says you don't need a driver, that thing is usually wrong. Go to the ATI website listed above and download the latest one.

Erm.. how do I know which one is the latest one? O:)

It's probably the same temperature as everywhere else in my house. :? I never noticed any significant difference in the room temperature.

Is your monitor a TFT, if so, when it blanks can you see a dark image? If this is the case then it is likely a board in the monitor called the inverter is failing. Inverters are probably the most common section of today's monitors to fail.

Go into power management in the control panel and turn the monitor going into standby off - if that works you might have some extremely random error making your pc think it's inactive when it's not.

i think you may have a ghost in ur house

lol

i have no idea

Anyways do you have any other kind of monitor you can test this on? It may be a monitor problem if updated drivers won't work.

^ embarrassing. Thought I read the thread before so I just skimmed over it this time.

Right now new drivers are probably your best bet.

I'm trying all your suggestions now. :) (Thanks a lot ;) )

Hmmm..

So what could be the problem if it's not the drivers? :|

Otherwise, get the latest Graphics Drivers for your card.

...And get ready to go to system and roll back the drivers. My latest ones for my 8600 GT turned Vista to greyscale.

Try to see if your monitor data cable is completely plugged in, and if it is, how tight the cable is.

That was my last post in 2007. Have a better 2008 than 2007!

Cords are plugged in fine as i've unhooked and rehooked my computer several times because my mom's work computer switches with mine when she stays home from work.
