He is caught by an official and Gepetto is jailed as they assume he has been mistreating Pinocchio. He then returns to Gepetto's house and kills a talking cricket who tries to warn Pinocchio against being disobedient. Pinocchio then falls asleep with his feet on the stove and they burn off.
