this isnt going to be a gaming laptop.

i have noticed that some upgrades while building computers are free. mainly in the memory section i see upgrades from 256MB DDR SDRAM (1x256MB) to 512MB DDR SDRAM (2x256MB). one thing about hardware ive never messed wtih is RAM, all my computers have been at or around 256mb and thats always been fast enough for me. so could someone explain a to me the difference between having 1 512 and have 2 256s?

The differenece between home and pro is mostly the features Since your on such a tight budget, just get home. You will likely have no need for pro.

The added RAM will make your computer run faster in general, especially if it runs in dual channel. A search on google for something like "what does RAM do?" should give you a pretty concise answer.

$600 for a laptop? I wouldn't bother if I were you. Laptops in that price range are VERY slow, and probly couldn't play Halo or Morrowind. If you really want to get one though, check http://www.newegg.com they have pretty good prices on everything related to computers :).

Like I said though, I would stay away from laptops in that price range. The manufacturers are usually small companies, and you may experience warrenty trouble if something goes wrong. I'm not trying to be rude, but many small computer companies don't do a very good job honoring their warrenties.

512mb ram (on pcs anyway, not sure if its the same for laptops?) is more or less the standard nowdays with the higher end being 2 to 4gb+

thanks for the tips.

i guess i wasnt very clear, if the graphics card makes a laptop out of my price range i dont need one. and about cheap laptops being slow, i dont need a fast computer if im not playing games.

im going to use this computer for the following:

interent- laptop must be wireless

watching movies- must have a dvd rom

BUT it would be nice to have the following (but if it makes it out of my price range i dont need it)

games- ok graphics card (i really dont play 3d games, mainly RTS)

512mb+- for whatever i need that for, all my computers have been 256 and i have had zero problem playing games like morrwind.

NOTE: I have a desktop computer, it is nice, very nice infact. I am getting this laptop becuase im going to be traveling alot this summer and i want to keep intact with friends and maybe write a few programs if i get bored.

PURPOSE OF THIS TOPIC:

sry i wasnt very clear in my first post, but i am looking for help finding a laptop with the specs i posted give or take some.

price range: $600-750

I know this isnt much for a laptop, but for my desktop i payed $500-600, that includes nice LCD moniter samsung, geforce video card, wireless microsoft keyboard/mouse combo, dvd rom, suround sound w/suboofer, and some stuff here and there. so im not about to pull 2k out of my butt for a laptop ill only be writing programs and surfing the net on.

Specs aren't the most important thing. Battery time and weight are. Believe me, you don't want a heavy laptop that only lasts an hour or two without charging. But yes, as long as you don't do any high-end gaming that sounds like a good system to me.

does anyone know anything about the computer brand acer?

Although this is not from experience, I hear they are pretty good machines. They are the biggest vendor of laptops in the UK right now.

I am actually looking into getting an Acer laptop when I leave for college this year.

Does anybody have experience with Acer? This would help me, as well.
