Just so everyone knows, OS X is based off LINUX! GO LINUX!

Uh no, last I remember they were both based off of unix :)

And as for your chart, it really matters what kind of distro you have ;)

Well, they are both based of UNIX. But then Linux improved Unix. And apples improved the GUI on Linux.

What GUI are you talking about? KDE? GNOME?

But Mac OS isn't based on either KDE or GNOME. And the KHTML developers hate the work Apple has done for Safari, and don't want to integrate it back in to their code because they say code quality sucks :).

And err, 'professional programs' - what are those? If we're talking about development tools, I'd say that Windows (MS's Visual X tools are really good, whatever you say, and then there's Borland and a couple of others) and Linux (GCC 4.0 is out, weeeeee) definitely are nice platforms. They don't really deserve the marks they got there :P

As for Graphic design, Linux has GTK 2, GIMP, 3d modeling software. Windows has Bryce, 3dMax, Photoshop / Paint shop pro... I think neither are that bad in Graphic design (though I agree Mac are better at that, in general).

Last but not least, virus protection isn't something inherent to an OS, and I'd say Windows currently does best in having 3rd party applications available for that purpose. (I've never heard of Mac virus scanners, though I'm sure some will exist - not a great many though)

I dont know much about Linux or Unix, but I know enough about windows and macs to say that windows are waaaaaaaay better, and the only reason macs are still in existence are because of schools that buy them.

If you seriously believe that, you really need to get your facts straight.

Mk, but I dont know ANYbody that uses a mac, or anybody that would even consider using one, they're far inferior in my opinion

I know a lot of people who own macs, and a lot of people who want one. Myself included.

Macs really aren't that inferior/superior to PCs. It's just a matter of preference 99% of the time.

Hannibal, are you talking about the Visual Studio'esque programs?

I don't know where I'd be without my Visual Studio :P It's just so darned handy

I am. X was basically meant to be interpreted as (C(++), J++, Basic, and whatever else MS has out there)

I do a lot of CAD (computer aided designing and drawing) stuff, and a lot of programming, but it's all done on Macs. I just personally dont see any good in buying one

I have a system with windows and a system with linux hooked together with a KVM switch.

I mainly use windows for playing games and general web browsing. I use linux for software development and testing. I use IceWM rather than KDE or GNOME, since both are way too bloated.

Lol, so true... he obviously has no idea what he is talking about. He is just another one of those kid's who think they know everything about everything and decide to hate windows for no reason:

Well Windows still shuicks.

Care to back up your previous statement?

Well, ice cream shuicks.

Not only is it an opinion, but you aren't even giving any examples of why you dislike windows. Don't like the ability to customize stuff? Don't like user friendlt stuff? Don't like massive ammounts of games?

Oh... sorry. Well since you hate WINDOWS so much, here is a copy of DOS.

Theres no "better" operating system, it all depends on what you need to use it for and what features you need.

For the average user Windows is perfectly fine.

If you are running a website and need a server then Linux or some unix based os will work great

If you need fast rendering for graphics or video editing then Macs are far better than the rest.

*refuses to vote as the question cannot be answered in a simple poll*

Agreed. That, and you didn't even bother to describe the operating systems correctly... "Apple" is not an OS. It's the company that makes Mac OS operating systems. Then there's the fact that Linux and unix are fairly similar, but cannot easily be compared to windows, seeing as windows comes with a window manager which can't easily be changed, while Linux and Unix have several window managers available (GNOME and KDE being the most universal).

So basically, you just asked us to compare a kernel + window manager to a company, to a core kernel, to another core kernel. I'm sure that you should be able to realize that that isn't really going to work...

i agree with both of you, but i still went with windows :)

Unix - Comercial unix is going to the dogs SCO are being pushed into oblivion by linux.

Unix - BSD unix is a very reliable server orientated but it is also getting good as a desktop.

Linux - My personal choice, it just works but that is because I know what I am doing ;-)

OSX/Apple - based on BSD not bad, nice design but you won't catch me buying one :-) (soon to be available on P4's I believe.)

Windows - No comment (I can't comment on it as I can't say anything printable about it, but it is ok for the average user or gamer)

Uber text editor/syntax highlighting/icon maker/web developing/help accessing program :o

It only cost me ~$50 with the Visual Basic functionality :)

I believe Linux is better . The kernel is very good and the community is great. As for distro , id go with Gentoo . Ive done a Stage 3 installation . Complied my own kernel . Was running sweet till i accidentally reformatted the partitons... So im in Ubuntu for the time being. Both communites are swell. I also had a Windows XP box , its not bad , the rest of my family uses it. Ive been using Windows since i was 2 . So you guys cant say im biased .
