July 21, 200817 yr Hi, People might be familiar with the topic that was in off topic about getting caught and whatnot. I googled a lot of stuff that was there out of curiosity, and I cleared my history and everything but can anyone tell me if there is any way to make it impossible to trace that I looked those things up at all because it is absolutely discusting, i know there is a perm record (external) but is there any way to remove internal traces of having searched those things at all.
July 21, 200817 yr Just delete the cache and everything to try to cover it up. The data is always on your hard drive though until it is written over. So in a way no it isn't impossible until it is written over even you deleted it, it is still shadowed on the hard driver.
July 22, 200817 yr If you're on a Windows box, there sure isn't a way. Besides, depending on what you looked up, there's one or two server logs that already have that information on them. I'm not too sure if I should advise you on this "problem" though. What the heck were you doing that makes you want to leave no trace on your computer? Because if it has to do with the FBI, I want no part of those guys. There was a thread that had some content that was "questionable" at best, and some of the topics within used terms some people weren't familiar with, so naturally some had to look it up. The OP of this thread wants to know how to delete all traces of these terms (think about /d/ in 4chan and you may get what some of the things brought up were, unless you don't use 4chan). It's nothing illegal or bad, just possibly disturbing. And I'll agree with sloter. There really isn't a way to hide it. You can clear history and delete the cache and all that fun stuff, but there are still ways to retrieve it, although if it's just family members you're worried about, clearing out those things is usually sufficient, and the data should be overwritten within a few days. The only sure way to completely erase data on a hard drive is to physically destroy the hard drive to a point where it's more a chunky powder than a functioning device (even programs like DBAN have been undone, although it's rather difficult to do so, especially if it's run multiple times). Then you also have to somehow hack into the servers for wherever you searched (like google or urbandictionary) and destroy all data relevant to you...Yeah..it's tough to live undetected. I would say just clear everything (Firefox - Tools, Options, Privacy (tab), Clear Now (at the bottom)). Then do a decent amount of browsing on normal sites (like tipit or instructables, something constructive and safe), then maybe clear a few more times, and repeat until the data has been overwritten enough times (provided it writes to the same place every time, which I think it does). July 22, 200817 yr I don't want to scare you or anything but there will always be a trace of what you looked at on your hard drive, even after formatting! We have software here that can recover files from even 2 or 3 previous formats. There are tools out there to completely wipe a hard drive to military standards, one such tool is DBAN (Darik's Boot and Nuke), but unfortunately you will obviously have to re-install everything from scratch again. Clare. So, the only way is to; A - not go to "weird" sites, or B - Use a sledge hammer and smash everything into 10000 bits, light it on fire, freeze it down with Liquid nitrogen - smash everything again, burn it up again and then make a box out of concrete put the pieces in it and fill it up with concrete and shoot it out into space. Or as everyone else has said, clear your cache&etc... Or if you're insure as hell, run dban 2-4 times... Of course this means reinstalling os and all. But my vote to my suggestion number one - b. July 22, 200817 yr Well er yeah, when we re-cycle hard drives, we literally take the platters out and smash them up. [Assist-X]

Your best bet is to use DBAN if you're serious about it. There's also a way to remove files from a Windows system in a LiveCD environment, provided you have a little bit of Linux knowhow and a few hours of time. However, this method is much less recommended.
