Never really used summoning properly before, and this is a really stupid question, but when you die, does your familiar die with you?

Yes they die, but not in cw or duel arena.

They will die if you die unless you are in a safe area. A safe area is somewhere where you die but do not lose stuff, such as Clan wars, castle wars, duel arena, you're house, etc...
