Jernlov
I think Nightwish should ditch the female singer and become a Katatonia-style 'depressive-rock-but-hey-we-have-goth-elements!' band. Their new singer is good, but the music is total [cabbage]e and apart from The Poet and the Pendulum, Dark Passion Play is really [bleep]. How2PK
Besides, I don't think discussing genres is pointless at all. It helps when it comes to recommending bands to people who like certain genres. I think it only limits people. So it's no good at all. Intriguing
The people also make the genres, not the music. And there I was under the impression that people make music. Cool.
blushenka
No, you see - he meant that people make the genres, not music makes the genres... It is about invoking a sense of wonder and magnitude that no other genre can depict."

In before constructivism-objectivism debate ensues. I know. I just like this topic so I wanted to add something even though I have nothing constructive to say. :( OT: I agree with How2PK to an extent--the presence of genres often locks people into listening to the same music with little variation. I know from experience, it takes effort to find new music out of your comfort zone. However, genres are also incredibly useful when you are in the mood for a specific sound. I guess even though I don't care too much for genres, I still try to learn all the different ones and the differences between them. Cool.
blushenka
I know you know (knew) :P I was sorta joking. Except I for one don't agree with How2PK and I don't like the direction this thread is going so I decided to be sarcastic about it. :anxious: "Metal isn't about violence or faggy whiny lyrics.
