dragoonson Posted September 13, 2008 Share Posted September 13, 2008 So...Thanks to recommend an artist/band thread,I've found a sudden influx of artists in my playlist.Now,here's the thing.I'm the sort of person who likes to categorise things,and my playlist happens to be categorised by Genre. So if you're having difficulty classifying stuff,I'd guess this is the best place to be.Here's my list of bands I don't know how to class. Judas Priest Smashing Pumpkins Darkthrone (I'm thinking Black Metal?) Within Temptation. They cross over so much that it's impossible. Personally I would just say something broad like new-prog. But I want to know what everyone else thinks. I've always just called them Progressive Rock. Progressive as a genre often includes many other elements of different genres anyway. I've always loved how they can take a relatively simple time signature (say, the 6/8 of In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3) and syncopate it so it sounds like something totally different. It's not interesting to discuss what kind of genre Therion is: Heavy Metal, Death Metal, Viking Metal, Nu Metal or whatever kind metal. Pop music. Boom. Done. I don't claim to know what it is, but this trash (not thrash) isn't symphonic, power, I don't think it's even metal. Umm. Why are people bothered by the fact that genres are being discussed? Maybe some people like to discuss pointless things. Isn't that what forums are for? Besides, I don't think discussing genres is pointless at all.
