September 13, 200817 yr So...Thanks to recommend an artist/band thread,I've found a sudden influx of artists in my playlist. Now,here's the thing.I'm the sort of person who likes to categorise things, and my playlist happens to be categorised by Genre. So if you're having difficulty classifying stuff,I'd guess this is the best place to be.Here's my list of bands I don't know how to class. Judas Priest Smashing Pumpkins Darkthrone (I'm thinking Black Metal?) Within Temptation. Also,we're all here to help,so I guess this can become a discussion, rather than just you guys to me... so i herd u liek devarts? If you look at me and feel offended by my 666-ism,think.I could be just as offended by your "cross".[hide=This's why I'm hot]The Eleventh Commandment:Thou Shalst only say "Amen, brother".Amen, brother :lol:Amen, brudda (referring to the 10th commandment)amen Bruder! (german ftw)I'm invulnerable to everything, except Lenin and Dragoonson. That's impossible. I love people.[/hide]
September 13, 200817 yr Judas Priest - Heavy Metal (NWOBH if you like) The Smashing Pumpkins - Alternative Rock Darkthrone - Black Metal Within Temptation - Symphonic Metal Cool.
September 13, 200817 yr Darkthrone was death metal at first, then black metal Why even try with that idiot? Honestly, there is no point whatsoever. I'd get better replies if I argued with a tree stump.
September 13, 200817 yr Just wondering but what would Rage Against he Machine be classified as, wikipedia says rap metal but I don't trust that 100%. 8,180WONGTONG IS THE BEST AND IS MORE SUPERIOR THAN ME#1 Wongtong stalker.Im looking for some No Limit soldiers!
September 13, 200817 yr Just wondering but what would Rage Against he Machine be classified as, wikipedia says rap metal but I don't trust that 100%. I'd label them as Alternative Metal, but Rap Metal works as well. Cool.
September 13, 200817 yr One band I've consistently struggled to classify for about 3 years now is Coheed and Cambria. They cross over so much that it's impossible. Personally I would just say something broad like new-prog. But I want to know what everyone else thinks. Steam | Soup | Last.fm

Personally I would just say something broad like new-prog. But I want to know what everyone else thinks. I've always just called them Progressive Rock. Progressive as a genre often includes many other elements of different genres anyway. However, it's kind of hard to ignore how similar the vocals are to that of an Emo singer, so you could call it Progressive Emo. Cool.
September 13, 200817 yr how can you have doubts about what Darkthrone is? :P Judas Priest - Heavy Metal (NWOBH if you like) The Smashing Pumpkins - Alternative Rock Darkthrone - Black Metal Within Temptation - Symphonic Metal Agreed, except I think Within Temptation is gothic/symphonic metal. Pure symphonic metal would be Therion. "Metal isn't about violence or faggy whiny lyrics. It isn't even about who plays the heaviest and fastest. It is about invoking a sense of wonder and magnitude that no other genre can depict."

Pure symphonic metal would be Therion. I know. But I tend to ignore Gothic as a genre prefix. To me it just seems like a slightly more specific definition of Symphonic and is a bit unnecessary. Cool.
September 13, 200817 yr Author how can you have doubts about what Darkthrone is? :P As said, they made a genre change =D.(Excuses) Silver's post made me lol. Ok,is there a difference between NightWish avec Tarja, and NightWish avec Anette?(Gothic/Symphonic(Just to piss off Silver) metal to Power metal, perhaps?) so i herd u liek devarts? If you look at me and feel offended by my 666-ism,think.I could be just as offended by your "cross".[hide=This's why I'm hot]The Eleventh Commandment:Thou Shalst only say "Amen, brother".Amen, brother :lol:Amen, brudda (referring to the 10th commandment)amen Bruder! September 13, 200817 yr If I were you I'd just put them under pop. Because in the end it's all pop music. Saves you a lot of effort. Signature by Maurice SendakWhen the stars make you drool just like a pasta fazool, that's amore!

However, it's kind of hard to ignore how similar the vocals are to that of an Emo singer, so you could call it Progressive Emo.There's no denying the emo and post-hardcore influences, so yeah, progressive emo is suitable. I've always loved how they can take a relatively simple time signature (say, the 6/8 of In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3) and syncopate it so it sounds like something totally different. It makes the music really interesting. And @ Dragoonson: both eras of Nightwish are symphonic power metal. Steam | Soup | Last.fm
September 13, 200817 yr Therion - Death Metal Selloutherion - doesn't exist.lol Steam | Soup | Last.fm
September 13, 200817 yr If I were you I'd just put them under pop. Because in the end it's all pop music. Saves you a lot of effort. What exactly defines Pop music? Popular music? But then what defines Popular? Hmm... :-k My Last.FmLeekSpinner!!!Random Furry Dance!!!Proud to hate life, since not too long ago!!!
September 13, 200817 yr Everything that isn't classic, jazz (or avant garde). People shouldn't make things more complicated then they really are. It's not interesting to discuss what kind of genre Therion is: Heavy Metal, Death Metal, Viking Metal, Nu Metal or whatever kind metal. Pop music. Boom. Done. A second edit: this not only goes for Therion. But just for just about every band. Signature by Maurice SendakWhen the stars make you drool just like a pasta fazool, that's amore!

A second edit: this not only goes for Therion. But just for just about every band. We aren't discussing it, I just stated it, and as you know, everything I say is fact; and unquestionable, boom, death metal, period! =)
September 14, 200817 yr That doesn't make it any more intersting, Adio. Signature by Maurice SendakWhen the stars make you drool just like a pasta fazool, that's amore!
September 14, 200817 yr That doesn't make it any more intersting, Adio. I don't think it's my problem, but, perhaps its the topics problem?
September 14, 200817 yr Nightwish in Tarja era = symphonic power metal, yes. Nightwish post-Tarja = NOT symphonic power metal. I don't claim to know what it is, but this trash (not thrash) isn't symphonic, power, I don't think it's even metal. Umm. Why are people bothered by the fact that genres are being discussed? Maybe some people like to discuss pointless things. Isn't that what forums are for? Besides, I don't think discussing genres is pointless at all. It helps when it comes to recommending bands to people who like certain genres. "Metal isn't about violence or faggy whiny lyrics. It isn't even about who plays the heaviest and fastest. It is about invoking a sense of wonder and magnitude that no other genre can depict."
