Multi-booter that will let me choose OS at start up?

Featured Replies

Basiacly I Installed XP just now, on my main laptop, and as soon as I start it up, it just loads XP right away, not even giving me an option to load Vista (yea-yea I tried F8). Does anyone know a programm that will let me choose which OS i wanna use before I start my session?

Weirdest PART: I had 60 gb on my c drive. I've split it into two parts (40gb left for vista and 20 gb for xp). After I installed the XP i checked disk C and it had 0 bytes of free memory, 100% full!!! Does anyone know how that could've happened? I uninstalled a game and I have 2Gb left, but i need the other 40 or so gb.

Update: I found a wireless driver, so I can go on the internet now, and I'm gonna download latest drivers and Service pack 3, but I still need an OS booter.

More or less, you're talking about a bootloader - and Windows comes with one right out of the box. Typically, when doing multi-boot setups, the idea is that the primary OS is always installed last. Anyway, Windows should have one, but if it goes right into Vista, you might need to hit F8 before full boot.

Of course, you could try GRUB. That's findable online someplace, can't remember the exact location.

I would not go though windows and completely disagree with Makoto_the_Phoenix. Going though windows means your dependent windows. i Would use grub.

I updated the question and I have new problems now :))

Also GRUB looks like a linux programm, but I might as well install linux anyways since i always wanted one, what version do you guys reccomend?

Still looking for a Multi-booter Though

If you always were on Windows, I'd suggest you a more user friendly one like Ubuntu, I know it's not the most user friendly but hey :P. My friend that insatelled Ubuntu on dual boot had never touched anything else than windows. Now, he doesn't want to return at all to windows but has to keep it since it's the college's laptop and needs it for the course lol.

I'll second Ubuntu. From what I've read, it's really user friendly, and Windows users will be able to adapt to it rather quickly. It's the one I'm putting on my computers, and I may use Ubuntu Server if I ever get around to fixing my desktop.

I believe you can use GRUB on Windows or Linux. Actually, here is a guide on it.

In effect, I'd use GRUB too. I believed that the Windows bootloader (which should've worked by default, guess it didn't, big surprise) would be an easier course of action for him.

If you really want to test the waters with Linux, Ubuntu is one way to do it. However, since you're used to Windows, Kubuntu might be slightly better suited to your needs (ironically, it's the same OS, different window manager. More on that later).

Remember: If you decide to install Linux, it will "own" the master boot partition, which means that it will use GRUB. Of course, GRUB is good at detecting other OSes on the hard disk, so you shouldn't have problems from there.

I would also recommend Ubuntu is a stable and very well rounded distro, although not the best for old hardware.

When you install Ubuntu GRUB is automatically installed anyway, you'll most likely end up modifying the boot order, but there are lots of guides on how to do that.

One question why are you wanting to dual/triple boot?

Personally I find it a bit annoying as I just end up using 1 all the time (Having said that I do have 3 computers, one with Vista Home Premuim, one with XP Pro and one with Ubuntu)

ps. Ubuntu + MythTV + a little time = an amazing HTPC OS \'

First off gub is install on a partition if you install a distro most of the time it is on that distros partition or you can install it standalone. Non the less GRUB rewrites your MBR(Master Boot Record) to boot to GRUB first. If you were to lets say rewrite vista or xp's MBR you would still have the grub partition but it wouldn't boot to it. Also you usually have to tell grub what to boot unless you install it and it auto detects but after the install you have to add manually. You really seem like a "(Ubuntu) Linux User & Enthusiast".

Skatepank, if you want a comprehensive fix, GRUB is the way to go. If you only want a quick fix, pop in your Vista install CD and run a repair on the boot records. It should detect XP and make it available through a boot menu that you'd have to either call through a boot key or will come up on its' own. :geek:

Thank you SO MUCH guys, I really apretiated your help, I got dual-booter to work, so now I'm able to choose either Vista or XP at start up... Right now I'm downloading Ubuntu too!

Does anyone know how to set up OS X, on my hp laptop though?

Hackintosh Guide Here.

It seems like a lot of trouble to put it on a windows pc, but it's been made easier by Apple's recent switch to Intel processors (or so I've read, so don't quote me on it).

You will probably have to buy a copy of Leopard, because torrenting one like they say in the guide can lead to all sorts of trouble (unless your ideal weekend is reformatting and re-installing 2 Operating Systems, then you're probably golden). They do say you're better off buying Leopard though, so I'll let it slide. Be careful though, messing with the BIOS is like cutting wires on a bomb - one wrong tweak, and your computer is done for.

It is illegal to put OSX anything but a product from Apple.

I mention torrenting, and the name is a "Hackintosh." At what point did you see "this is perfectly legal", may I ask?

He just wanted to know how. I told him. It's possible, but as I stated, I don't recommend it (and if I didn't state it before, I have now), for possible complications with the install, and legal issues.

I never said that you'd written "this is legal". I'm just pointing out that it is illegal. Since it's illegal, the text should actually be removed... Since mods locks posts with limewire&etc, but that's not for me to decide.

You should know that the computer is not "done for" just because you set a faulty value in the BIOS, unless you up the voltage on the cpu or ram too much.

There's always the option of default and CMOS.

I don't think the text should be removed. Maybe we keep it up as a warning that it's possible, but highly illegal, and not recommended...If someone really wanted to know, they would just google search it. I happened to have that link bookmarked, so I posted it. If a mod wants to take it down, fine, but I've already expressed the illegality of torrenting, and the process, and given recommendations against it. If someone wants to ignore the warnings, it's their problem...

As for the BIOS, you're right, but I may as well explain my reasoning.

Now, to experienced tech people, changing settings in the BIOS may be a simple, even routine thing (especially if you do modding for people, like gamers). However, let you average office worker (or teacher if you go to my school -.-) whose computer experience is about limited to Outlook and Microsoft Office, and the story changes.

How many of these people would know that if something went wrong, they should trigger the BIOS reset jumper if loading defaults didn't work? How many even know that the small battery can be removed and replaced to achieve the same effect (after fully discharging the system, of course)....Probably not many.

Yes, some changes are relatively safe to make (like changing the boot order so your cd drive is booted from first, then usb, then HDD, for example)...Other changes, like changing voltages, can be very dangerous. The problem is some people may not know what to change, or by how much to change it. The problem isn't that the BIOS as a whole is dangerous, its experimentation in sensitive parts of BIOS, brought about by natural curiosity that's the problem.

Why the hell would they publicly sell it then? (Link to OSX being sold publicly)

It's sold because, maybe you have a mac with the Tiger and want to upgrade.

If you read the EULA:

In short, 'General Apple F.U.D.', which Apple is using to keep you tied to their expensive hardware. Downright stupid of Apple to be like that, in my opinion. Don't they realize they could make a lot more $$$ by not being so restrictive? :-s
