What980 Posted November 10, 2008 Share Posted November 10, 2008 Hello, I am currently using an HP Pavilion zv6000 with 512MB of RAM. I'm really thinking about adding 2 gigs of RAM to my laptop and i'm wondering, is it really worth it? I'm hoping it will make my multi tasking youtube, runescape, instant messenger, random browser experiences run smoother. Also, will jumping this much in RAM help RS HD run smooth? At the moment when I run HD, I can only play on small screen and that's basically by myself. Going to busy places like Edge or G.E really makes me lag. Will this improvement help me? Its not as simple as that, first of all you need to get a flashdrive that is compatible with that feature and it is a Vista exclusive. You won't see much benefit if you already have >1gb of Ram but really you shouldn't be running Vista with <1gb. ps. I'm upgrading to 4gb of Ram myself soon. I've had the chance to see the difference between 512 MB and 1GB alone, and even that is a definite increase. Basically, the more RAM you have, the more you can do... Further, the less chance that anything will ever get squished for needed space, which would cause performance lags. However, don't get more RAM than what you'll need at maximum at any time, as having too much RAM can have its' own issues. (Yes, contrary to popular belief, that can happen... Some ancient games were designed around lower maximum RAM limits, and don't like to run when there is more.) That, and you don't want to leave yourself short in the wallet for available $$$... :geek: Tip: Until you can upgrade your RAM, just try to avoid letting your remaining RAM get below 100MB... Windows gets cranky (and slow) when you have less spare RAM then that. :? ~D. V. My cousins friend has a laptop with '256" ram, it took him almost 3 min to load up IE, when he plug a 1gb into the laptop, it went from 3 min to 2 seconds..... When he play CS, he used to experience alot of "matrix" mode, and he had to turn down all the feature, now its all fly and fast and furious, so fast, that he couldn't get used to it for a while.... So, it is worth the money to upgrade, basically, if you got xp system, 1gb at least to run smoothly, if you got vista, then 2gb just to be safe For the Flash drive thing, you need to buy more expensive drive that enable vista ready boost in order for it to work effectively, basically it has a set transfer read and write speed, only if you exceed certain which allows the ready boost to work effectively, there are also 3rd party readyboost like programs for xp, seems to work for some people. a happy Runescaper Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
remoteman Posted November 16, 2008 Share Posted November 16, 2008 definitely do it, i recently did the same thing, albeit from 1-2gbs, and it improved speed out of sight. I was having issues with firefox and displaying several webpages at once, it fixed it instantly. For my laptop it was a really easy swap too, i've got a Dell inspiron 9300, and i just unscrewed the one screw on the bottom for the ram flap, flipped it open and swapped the ram over. My only problem is that now i keep getting this stupid error that 'windows cannot complete the requested API' or something like that, when ever i try and hibernate it. I've looked it up and it seems to only occur with laptops with 2gb of ram or over. I've run the microsoft patch that was meant to fix it but to no avail. It's a pain in the arse, because i use my laptop at school and i used to hibernate it between class, now i have to carry it out of my bag so that it doesn't over heat, or turn it off, and it takes 5mins to turn on lol. Just my two cents. Definitely do it though, for the gains in responsiveness.
