Typography

Featured Replies

Well it's pretty much a effect that makes it better than all other signatures specially in competitions.

Typography isn't just slapping a load of words together in a jumbled signature.

Typography concerns everything to do with text, font, typeface etc.

Every image you've ever seen that contains text has been carefully (in most cases) thought out from a typographical angle, to become its most effective.

As pryo said, Typography is simply everything having to do with type. A Typography signature, in that case, uses type as it's focal point.

Programs like Photoshop and InDesign have lots of features for editing text.

This doesn't just mean making it bold or italics. There are options like kerning (the space between the letters, makes a lot of difference), you can adjust the width and height of individual letters, how far they sit from the base line and other factors.

Good text and lettering is a hard thing to do, and goes far beyond just selecting a font and typeface.

A font is the base set of letters, eg Times New Roman.

A typeface is the style(s) applied to it, eg Times New Roman 12pt bold.

I understand that the text is all placed carefully but does it suppose to be readable and in order or is it just different text with different fonts all relating to a particular theme?

Your thinking of the "typography sigs" often found on fanboards. The vast majority of these types of sigs require no effort or typographic talent (nor any creativity) -- it's simply a mishmash of seemingly random words and fonts squeezed into a sig.

Here are some links on what you might call 'real' typography:

Great examples Venomai :) . Agree with you as always.

From Wikipedia - Typography is the art and techniques of arranging type, type design, and modifying type glyphs. Type glyphs are created and modified using a variety of illustration techniques. The arrangement of type involves the selection of typefaces, point size, line length, leading (line spacing), letter-spacing (tracking) and kerning.
