can someone post a really quick example so i know what exactly i should do?

Right click the template > Save As > Open it up in paint or other program then fill in colors, do textures and such.

oh and are they supposed to be crazy looking/unique or should they look like proper houses

I think maybe you should shrink down the size of the houses that will be in this picture, or the land will fill up too fast.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Also, larger scale buildings in pixel form don't look as good as they would in smaller scale.

The size of the houses are big for a small pallet. I suggest u make the houses smaller to accomidate for more people if they want to do it.
