thrash-boy
ok so ever since the beginning of time there has been only 1 computer in my house, and today my brother got a crappy old acer for free, so ive decided i want to set up a home network so we can use the internet from the new computer. the problem is i have never done any networking before and need alot of help. Both computers are running windows xp and have Ethernet ports, so does the modem. I have a USB printer but im not sure if that would be usable on a network being USB. Could someone help me choosing a router please? im not looking for the top of the line super router, just something that does the job. Wired is fine, and if its cheaper it would be preferred. im also going to need a bit of help setting it up. thanks in advance

eggzs
Purchase something like this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6833124005 Plug the modem into that and both computers into the switch.
Furah
Yeah, just go buy a router, there may be a bit of setting up to do, but it's easy, just plug the modem into the WAN port and plug in the computer into the 1 and 2 slots, all using ethernet cables. Da_Latios
Yeh, what Mage_Dude said pretty much. Ethernet cables is the key! You could also use a wireless USB. sloter
Netowrking in windows is actually pretty simple. If you have a printer attached to one of the computers this will be simple which i take it you don't havea network printer or a stand alone. Go to Printer and Faxes under control panel and click Sharing... Click The share this printer radio button. Create a name for it then you should be good. Now i don't know what your computer name is but you could go into My Network Places to access it or you could run the computer network path like \\COMPUTER_NAME. It should prompt asking you if you want to install the driver for the printer or even install it automatically. It should be added as a printer on the other computer now. If it isn't you oviously didn't do it right. Also i would go with a linksys router or switch. Cisco for the win!
