My parents said that I could get a laptop for my graduation present. I want a computer that can do pretty much everything (within reason) and I think I might have have found a good laptop but I'd like some feedback from you guys.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6834220461

Basic info:

CPU Type Intel Core 2 Duo P8600 2.4G

Memory Size 4GB DDR2

Hard Disk 250GB

Graphics Card NVIDIA GeForce 9650M GT

Video Memory 1024MB

I'd also like it if you guys told me to get this laptop now or if I should wait until the end of the year to get a computer with similar stats with Win 7.

If you can wait and see what AMD and ATI are going to be doing with the mobile HD4000 series coming out sometime here in the middle of the year (IIRC). Should be quite powerful.

Thanks, but I'm not sure that ASUS will put it into their laptops, but other then that is it good?

(Also, is ASUS a good brand?)

ASUS are good, but a lot of other brands are too. Considering how good value for money things like the 4850 HD are (on par with Nvidia's GTX 260 for just over half the price), if you can wait then it should be worth it.

Seems a little expensive to me. I think you could get a similar quality laptop (minus the video card) for probably around $300 cheaper and just buy a video card... Unless you really like that processor.

I don't really know how to install a video card on a laptop and the other laptops I've found have a weak video card and their ratings aren't as high.

I find it funny that that laptop has 4GB memory and a x86 OS on it.

Can x86 use 4GB to it's full potential? (I only sorta know what x32 and x64 can handle, no idea about x86)

I'll let you figure out what went wrong there.

x86 is a 32 bit processor FYI. It can't. You want Vista 64.

Yeah, sometimes Asus do things like that, that should be done differently, but even there, an 32bit os, even if it uses 3.5 of the 4GB, will be faster than on a system with 3GB memory.

Asus is actually one of the best brands imo.

So would you guys recommend that I buy this, look for another laptop or wait for Win 7?

I think that you should wait to get your laptop after graduation or wait til they start have the back to school sales because by then you could get either the same laptop for cheaper or get something better for the same and if your interested in getting a macbook at all apple has some pretty good back to school deals too.
