Right. I see.

But can you be 'taught' to be brave?

I had always thought you simply are.

But this feeling of 'born-courage' may have just been from ancient childhood teachings that, while not consciously remembered, infused certain principles which influence everyday action.

But I don't want to go among mad people!

Oh, you can't help that. We're all mad here..."

well bravery probably has some biologic component, as does a lot of traits but personality is a mix of genes and life experience.

Orthodoxy is unconciousness

the only ones who should kill are those who are prepared to be killed.

You are not "taught" in the same sense that a teacher educates you about arithmetic or science, but instead it's more of an adaptation-like thing. If you are left in the wilderness for quite some time, your mindset about a lot of things are probably going to change. If you ever seen the movie Castaway or the show Dragon Ball Z, you will know that when people are put into situations where they are isolated from civilization and they have to fend for themselves, their personalities will change to suit the environment better to aid them in survival. They won't be as picky about the food they eat, they will learn to become more productive, and they will be grateful for the things they have. A prime example of how much experiences can alter one's personality.

As for bravery, I guess when you come face to face with your fears you will gradually start becoming desensitized to those fears and they might even vanish completely.

Zierro is right. I was going to add a few things but I scrolled down further and he's already addressed them. But yeah you can definitely be taught to be brave. An example, my little cousin Shane is scared of needles. I was scared of needles too, in fact had a phobia of them and taught myself some techniques that desensitized myself... thus making me braver. We talked about why he was so afraid, a discussion about some of the techniques and this made him feel braver as I'm someone he looks up to. He came back from the doctors and said "It didn't hurt this time! And I wasn't scared!". So sure, you can definitely be taught to be brave. I also agree that from most things I have heard and seen with my own two eyes and that of other people that nurture plays an extremely important role. I have even witnessed where things have been from nature and hereditary and someone has put a stop to it because of the nurture. They had the ability to escape something, passed on from generation. For example, alcohol addiction. It can be a genetic trait but with enough education and nurture, it can be overcome.

The only people who tell you that you can't do something are those who have already given up on their own dreams so feel the need to discourage yours.

If all the brave people die will there be no army? No. The "Bravest of the Unbrave" Will step in to the army.

Pureprayer, you're awesome.

Even if natural selection worked like that and bravery was simply genetical, you'd be missing brave people not enlisting, cowards being drafted, countries having no wars for extended periods of time, or countries having no armies at all.

I guess it will all clear up for you once you finish high school biology anyway.

We will weed out the cowards through our own selection, natural or not.
