A must read about Passwords ( is your p@ssw0rd safe )

Featured Replies

This surely was one of the most interesting things I've read here in ages. Thanks for posting.

It's sad to see how horrible people are at making passwords, especially this:

3.03% "123456"

2.13% "password"

Setting password to password must be the dumbest thing you could possibly do whatsoever.

I just don't get how people can set passwords to things like these. Personally, my passwords all involves caps, lower case, over 5 random numbers and over 8 letters (ones that you would NEVER guess. Ever.).

Faults in IT security are as old as IT itself though.

I have a lot of accounts with password as password (well actually the Dutch equivalent "wachtwoord"). I do it for stuff I don't care about, which is about half of my accounts. Guess what my password was on TIF for the first few months ;).

When everything's been said and done, more has been said than done.

All skills 80+

4% of passwords appear to reference things nearby. The name "samsung" is a popular password, I think because it's the brand name on the monitor that people are looking at (I have two in front of me right now). Similarly, there are a lot of names of home computers like "dell," "packard," "apple," "pavilion," "presario," "compaq," and so on. It's hard to figure out what belongs in this category, though. Is "cocacola" a popular password because there is a can of coke on their desks? Or just because it's a well-known name? In any event, "cocacola" appears to be more popular than "pepsi" among those who choose passwords.

Proof that Pepsi drinkers are smarter than Coke drinkers!!!

Anywho... To those of you who say you have random numbers and letters for your passwords, how do you remember them? :?

At my work the IT Dep. is verry strict when it comes to passwords my e-mail at work must have a new password every 2 months and u may not use the same password again for a year and u need to use caps and shift and numbers in your password but then when u forget your password or u forget to chance after 2 months u need to phone them and thy chance it to a default password that is all ways the same and it is one the hackes love.

Now i have made my self guilty of not changing my default password and using it till it ends and then phoning them to reset it for me so i can still use the default one because i am to lazy to chance my password every 2 months.

I phoned the IT Dep. and ask if thy an make it so i don't have to chance my password every 2 months and thy said no its for security reasons and thy can not chance it so tell them that there default password is i security risk and that many people don't bother to chance it because thy are to lazy to think of a new password every 2 months and thy said that i do not know what i am taking about.

I work for the Goverment and we change our password every 3 months it must contain letters , numbers, and Signs like + - * / = ... etc. the password must contain at least 15 letters ... it is still possible for hacker to hack but important information is locked and the password for each files is different. So basically it is impossible for hacker to hack it unless they can find all the password for each folder . (Btw even files contain my pictures is password potected) ::'
