O.O

Interesting...

Time to type qwerty on random runescape players passwords =D.

We have noticed that a relatively large number of our users are using the same few extremely common passwords.

Using an extremely common password puts your account at significant risk, as it makes it extremely easy for someone else to guess it. In particular certain dictionary words and names are extremely common choices.

To help keep our users safe we have therefore today disallowed the use of the 500 most common passwords that people choose. You will no longer be able to use these very common passwords. If you already have one of these weak passwords, then you will be forced to change your password when you next try to login to the game.

For help on how to change your password: click here.

For guidelines on how to choose a good password: click here.

We recommend you use a combination of letters and numbers, and then write the password down and store it in a very safe place so you dont forget it. Andrew.

Also they banned those passwords eons ago.

apparantly they aren't mathimaticans:

65+16 (names, aren't in a dictionary) +14 (doubt asdf could be found in a dictionary :P) + 5 (from popular culture)+ >0 (passw0rd etc aren't in a dictionary either) is more than 100%

really this article seems to be very rough, and more like a popular written article (like something that could be posted on a newspaper) than something that should be taken serious!

But you must remember that some passwords can be placed in more then one catagory, hence, like some runescape polls, they can go over 100%

Good read. Thanks for the info.

One thing worth mentioning about long passwords that take 'years' to crack though, that it'll take so long if you have indeed numbers, lowercase and uppercase letters, and symbols. If you've a 12-character password that looks like this: 192837465182, for example, I don't think it'll take too long to guess (at one billion/s, with only 200 of them).

Edit: I also noticed that these cracking programs, which I tried for educational purposes, tend to go from bottom to top, so it might not apply to all attempts, but passwords that start with 9 or z might be less likely to be discovered as the cracker might give up before any results have shown up.

Nice find, sirlonewolf!

I can't say I'm surprised by the results though! I think this shows not only that most people are stupid (lol) but also the laziness of society in general today. I'd wager most of the people who use those examples are simply too lazy to type in a safer password every time they use it.

My password is a combo of 8 letter(s)/number(s). I have not lost my account (first and main) in any way, shape, or form since I created it in June 2005. :? (Yes, I'm bragging, hehe.)

no hackers can crack 19 characters. \'

I usually take about 30 seconds to write my passwords, with my eyes closed half the time. Lots of cutting and pasting, uppercase, random insertion of numbers, etc.

It takes ME a few days to remember them.

My password was 20 characters long and changed every four to six months, so at the rate of some of these calculations I'd probably never be 'hacked' or have my account stolen. No one ever did get into my account, and chances are never will; even though it hasn't been changed in two+ years. :P

Still, interesting article. My Runescape password is unfortunately more secure then my online banking password.. Sheesh, better get to work on that one. #-o May need to rethink a few passwords actually; since mine tend to go around the 7-8 character limit, that and their due for a change.

I really think it is sad that so much people make these random easy passwords that can be guessed. Although that is sort of a good thing, since the hackers go for the super easy password accounts they are probably not going to go for mine  Although if one of them do go for my password I'm kind of dead -.-

I have this app on my iPod that randomly generates passwords. and u can set character limits and whether to use numbers too with letters or not
