Nazgul740
OK so basicly i am paying 5 bucks a month and for some dam reason whenever i try and access runescape.com i get an "error document contains no data" message on my screen! thats B.S. yet i can't get it off and unless i find how to change it i can't only play when my brother allows me! That won't work its from a network thing i think... not from the browser its self. i think he change the ketword so it said runescape was an evil site or something.... yet i really have no clue here is all that i know: from around the time 7:00pm from to 4:00am when i try and access the runescape home page all i get with mozilla firefox is a message "error page has no data" When i try with internet explorer all i get is the "page cannot be displayed" webpage its not a java problem i can get around those with a little fiddleing. This won't even let me on the freaking site to fiddle... i would post on RS forums yet i can't get on to post! AAAAHH this problem is multi computer and its the same on all of them. I think it has something to do with the LAN network that we have set up around our house cause even on the mac computer i can't get RS on . same message same bs the mac computer doesn't even have a firewall ! just tried mini clip and when i click on rs's link there it fails too so i got no clue how to take this stupid thing down i am as clueless as this shounds.... anyone got any suggestions? Kielmccaul75
From the description you have given us it is very hard to tell what the hell is going on :) For starters, are you running any firewalls? Zonealarm or Norton Internet Security? If you are, check the blocked list on them. It is the runescape homepage right? So I am assuming it has nothing to do with your java, but if it is only the game then tell us :) Try running it through a different browser, Firefox totally owns Internet Explorer. Post more information! (I am sorry if what I have posted isn't that helpful, I am not that good with computers. But hey you never know, it may be as simple as the things ive listed)

Mercifull
Search for a file called HOSTS (note it has no file extension) Should be in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC Open it in notepad. Check to see if there are any entries for runescape eg 127.0.0.1 runescape.com If there is then delete it and Runescape will work again. If its not there then add a new entry 127.0.0.1 http://www.neowin.net Or whatever his site is. This will give a "page cannot be displayed" when he tries to visit that site. Then tell him you wont unblock that site until he unblocks runescape ;) Mercifull <3 Suzi "We don't want players to be able to buy their way to success in RuneScape. EugenyG
Hmm, the hosts trick didn't work for me? I wanted to try it out, so I put in "127.0.0.1 runescape.com" line (no quotes) in my hosts file, restarted (checked it's still there), but Runescape still works fine. I also had another line there, 127.0.0.1 localhost, I tried either removing or keeping it (while having the RS line) and nothing changed, runescape.com still works fine. I'm connected through a router. I also tried putting 192.168.1.101 (internal IP) instead of 127..., and still to no avail. Windows XP SP2. Anyone knows why? Live free or die. First option is exhausted, so guess what remains?

Mercifull
You definitly edited the HOSTS file and not hosts.sam or something? And when saved it you didnt add a filename either? You must be doing it wrong because a PC will ALWAYS look at a HOSTS file before DNS to load websites :-/ Try 0.0.0.0 runescape.com and DO NOT remove the localhost entry already in there and make sure theres NO # on the same line. DaN
Some routers have the ability to block websites per Per Schedule. The IP address for your router will be something like 192.168.0.1 You need to find out what make the router is and then see if you can find documentation for that type of router this will probably tell you what the default ip address/password of the router is. If you do try and connect to the router only to find your brother has passworded it so you cant get in there will be a reset button hidden on the router wich will be a small hole you have to poke something thru this will reset the router and remove any password setup to keep you out. Beware that some routers reset ALL setting when the button inside the hole is pressed it would be best to read the documentation before resetting the router. Thats all I can think of for now. ~Dan64AuSince 27 Aug 2002

EugenyG
Ok, 0000 did the trick. It also worked substituting other IPs (like have rs.com go to yahoo). Isn't this kinda dangerous? Seems like a phishing heaven. Since the hosts file isn't protected or anything, just about any trojan could, say, redirect your credit card website to a fake identical-looking site at a scammer's adress, and you'd give away your CC number (unless you suspect a scam it would be VERY hard to detect, since your browser won't give any symptoms of redirection typical of regular phishing sites). Live free or die. First option is exhausted, so guess what remains?
Mercifull
Its a common trick used by spyware companies to redirect you away from Google to their own search engines to serve adverts. Its also used by some viruses to block access to the AV sites. HJT normally picks up on anything not redirected to 00000 or 127... You can also lock down the hosts file with software such as SpywareGuard and i think even HJT and Spybot can do it. crucifyed4us
Uh Mercifull you don't need to get kids editing their HOST file, this has got to be the most retarted thing I've ever heard. For all you know Mercifull his parents could have done that and he is simply saying it's his brother. If it was actually his brother why did he not simply go to his parents? The majority of people who use this board and play RS in general are kids who DON'T need to be editing stuff like this. I remember when my mom blocked a game because I was playing entirely too much of it when I was younger, I posted a question on a forum as to how to get around it, and no one answered. This forum needs to be a place where people can come and feel safe, not where people have to worry about what they're learning. THINK BEFORE YOU POST INFORMATION ON EDITING VITAL COMPONENTS TO THE SMOOTH WORKINGS OF THE USERS COMPUTER-network troubleshooting 101 noob. Rhys
OK, if the kid is lying about it being his brother that has set this up, then who's fault is that? The kid's. If he pays for the game, then he should be entitled to play it. Again, if he's lying, and he DOESN'T pay for it, who's fault is that? Agreed though, the HOSTS file shouldn't have been edited and usually Merc wouldn't post that kind of information. But still, we have to work with the stuff we're given, if it's lies, it's not our fault.

Aametherar
The way I see it, if he actually is teeling the truth anyways its not gonna help his case, he screws is bro same way he screwed him. His brother obvioussly knows how to do it so itl have no effect, and considering circumstances might screw him worse lol. If it was his parents that did it good job for them and im sure theyl find another way to block it after he unblocks or password the file. Although most are kids in runescape, and most are the reason its a community kids shouldnt be around, well they shouldnt be around it lol.
