Hey guys,

So my 360's broken, it shows one section of the ring light as red, I have done everything the xbox website has suggested that I can do to fix it at home and so I'm going to have to send it back to microsoft to be repaired, so I was wondering can anyone tell me how much it's going to cost to send it off and have it repaired? I live in the UK and my warranty has expired

Oh crap. your from the UK.

Can I get a poundcheck on $50 and $100?

Damn it. I was rushing to type that in first I didn't read the full thing. :(

If your warranty is expired I think it comes up to around 1/2 the price of the box. Or, if you don't want to pay at all, wrap a towel around that sucker and leave it on until it gets the RROD. Unless you bought your box right on launch Microsoft will cover the cost of the repair in full (warranty for RROD is 3 years after the xbox's manufacturing date).

NO! That's the most [developmentally delayed]ed myth I have ever heard, don't do the "towel trick" because it's [bleep]ing [developmentally delayed]ed.

Really what [wagon] decided that wrapped an electronic in a goddamn towel and overheating it on purpose was a good idea.

Man it isn't a myth :P Me cousin did it once. it was EPIC. Just a warning, too. Take your hard drive or memory stick out and remove any discs. It may be obvious, but some people sometimes look it over.

(I know, I didn't believe it either about the towels around the xbox trick, but boy did i [cabbage] bricks when I found out it worked. Except the heat killed his hard drive and disc.)

(As a sidenote for the lulz, the Futureshop xbox 360 display console had the RROD. OH how the PS3 fanboys were laughing hard.)

(OTHER SIDENOTE FOR THE LULZ, but is true. That cousin bought that 360 for $30 from my other cousin cuz it had the RRoD. He then toweled it, fixed it, and sold it back for $150.)

I don't really care if someone got lucky, it's still a [bleep]ing [developmentally delayed]ed idea to do. And some people wonder why they have problems in the first place when they think a trick like this can help.

By the way, even if you got lucky with it the only thing that will happen is that it will quickly go back to RRoD state soon.

Assuming that they do the same wrong thing in the first place leading to it?

I do however agree that it IS a [developmentally delayed]ed concept, and that the founder of the concept must have been an idiot, but hey, it works, so why complain? The only problem is that if you even leave it in the towel for... lets say, 2 or 3 minutes longer than normal, it'll brick it. Don't leave the xbox 360 for anything while it's in the towel, and no problems will be had. And be sure not to use a fuzzy towel, cuz it could create static while the xbox is on, and that could brick it on the spot, and possibly set it ablaze :P

Basically, be careful and it will work.

EDIT: In most cases it will not revert to the RRoD. RRoD is an error that's caused when extreme loading or a large amount of the built in RAM-like stuff is being used. It simply runs out of space and refuses to work.

My crappy 5 minute made theory is that you could possible overdo the RAM with the heat. I have no sciency base for this, just that my ps2 memory card wiped when I left it out in the sun and got hot. Goodbye, Champions of Norrath level 50 save files, you will not be forgotten

The card however, still worked.

I don't think you're understanding me, Ace. The most it would do is work temporarily and then you would be back to square one, a broken xbox and a broken warranty.

Under no circumstance should someone ever wrap up an electronic like that in a towel and run it. Just trust me on this one ok? It's stupid.

This actually sounds fairly awesome.

The towel thing not only fails, but it voids the warranty, RROD or not. They can tell. They might even refuse to fix it. I know they definitely refuse if you open it and tamper with it.

I DO understand what you're. I agree with you perfectly, that yes, it's stupid to put electronics in towels, because of the massive capable dangers in it. And yes, it could very likely go back to RRoD. But it will not go to the RRoD immediately. Some 360's are just like that from the minute they are

made. Whenever you towel it, you are running a quarter chance of fixing it, a quarter chance of failing, and a half at killing it forever. I was assuming that the said 360 of Sticky was a good one. I am sorry for assuming that without saying it first, yes. The towel is for people who know they have a good 360, and haven't had an RRoD within 1 year of purchase. I guess it may just be a manufacturing problem, and the factory might just have a flaw here or there where the encoding or data or all that stuff in the memory area of it is applied. The 360 is complicated, and many things could be causing this problem. You could possibly have a malfunctioning batch of 360s. To address your statement directly, chances are it will not send you straight to square one. A towel COULD however, fix it but kill loading speed. It's up to the owners to choose whether or not to send it in to professionals or attempt to towel it. Another possible fix for the RRoD is to just sit back and leave it alone for a year or two. I don't know if it works for the 360, but it works for my computer. I should really get going, because it's almost 6 now, and I better run to the card shop before the game starts :P Nadril, if you have any disagreements or anything about this, just PM me and I'll look at it later, when I get back, because this is making me type walls of text and possibly could lead to this thread being closed due to flaming or all the whatnot, and I don't want to make sticky mad :P

I clicked post, 2 more people posted while I was typing this, and one is interesting.

Yes, Lenin. That is a good point. Towel = Last resort. It would be classified as tampering, because it is doing something that would damage most electronics, and is also basic knowledge not to put warm things in other things that traps heat. It would also fall under the scenario of sticking your xbox in an oven and putting it on high, because you know it will overheat, which Microsoft WILL refuse to fix it in the towel because of it, as they would probably look at a scenario like that. Same factors, same dangers. To them, it would probably be just like submerging it under water while it is on. Stupid and dangerous, with obvious dangers. And it WOULD be stupid to do something like that and expecting them to fix it.

Wrapping it in the towel and leaving it on is to force the console to RROD, Nadril. Note that the OP says that his box doesn't have the RROD, which is why it's not covered by warranty. If he got the RROD, the box's repair would be covered in full by Microsoft (if his box was manufactured within 3 years from now). Nowhere did I say wrapping it in a towel would fix his box. The point is to completely break it so that Microsoft will pay for it in full, rather than it being only partly broken (yet still unplayable), and having to fork over $100 to get it fix.

Obviously you wouldn't mention to MS that you wrapped it in a towel to force the RROD...

All that typing I did was pointless.

I think I'm gonna go slam my face into the wall for a bit.

Well yea, if you smashed it to pieces they would be able to tell. Distinguishing whether the interal parts of an electronic melted due to intential over-heating or unintentional overheating is a little bit harder to tell.

RRoD should be illegal. Microsoft should've placed a lifetime guarantee on that thing.

Actually, I'm pretty sure that Xbox Live does a check for modifications, and you can be charged for tampering.

O rly?

Are you talking about visual modding?

That's perfectly legal (I think), it'd just void the warranty.

But I AM quite sure it's illegal to be modding anything beyond looks.

I'll check me 360 manual, and edit this post once I find the final answer to this.

I do recall a man was charged for modding his 360, because of something to do with the ToS or Copyright...
