Lateralus
I have a double whammy of nights out planned for Friday and Saturday this week to mark my last day as a student. I may not survive into professional life but it should be fun. What's your degree? How are the career prospects looking? My degree is in Publishing. As far as career prospects, they aren't too bad - I've got a decent choice as far as specialising in what I'm doing so I've got a bit of leeway. A lot of publishers are looking for graduates right now because they see them as cheap labour but I don't mind that to be honest as I'm only beginning. The credit crunch hasn't effected publishing as badly as other industries because people are staying in so that shouldn't effect me. The worst case scenario is that I need to move or do some unpaid work experience for while to improve my prospects (although I've had some through the course). Ha, a publisher you say! Did I ever mention to you that I hope to be a writer... ;) La lune ne garde aucune rancune.
1_man_army
I do recall that, I'll need a brown paper envelope filled with crisp £20 notes. As you can see I have no ethical boundaries lol. Lenticular_J
Ha, a publisher you say! Did I ever mention to you that I hope to be a writer... ;) Aha, I knew you were going to. I was just writing a post warning him to be careful, what with all the hopeful authors on this board... I always forget how many of you guys are in college or even graduating (or at least close to it). What all are the gang majoring in, for the most part? catch it now so you can like it before it went so mainstream

I'm not that interested in commissioning so there is little I can feasibly do for aspiring authors anyway to be honest*. Plus I knew Lateralus wanted to write so I was kind of inviting this conversation for the fun of it. For the record if anyone wants to publish their writing all I would say is submit some samples to a literary agent...damn this is off topic lol. Edit - That being said, you never know how things can turn out but I don't see it happening personally. Thanks, I handed in my dissertation on Friday, it was an epic 102 page nightmare (lots of Appendices). Just 2 essays to do and then I can catch up on the 3 weeks worth of sleep I've missed recently. Allbot
I'm really not looking forward to college and getting a job, etc. It's not that I don't do well in school and won't get into a nice college, it's just that I'm not looking forward to that kind of responsibility. I like going through school calmly and having fun playing video games and the like. I really don't see how I will enjoy college that much. I probably won't have time to 'party' and all that stuff seems to be for people who are willing to do mediocre or worse in college. I'd rather concentrate on my studies here because it's when it really matters and how you will perform in your job. I'm currently in 10th grade. college isnt really that hard, in fact i find it a lot easier than high school. you have alot more free time not to mention freedom. partying is fun to blow off some stress and steam, it fun. not everyone that goes to parties are mediocre, just most. and if ur talking about ur grades in highschool, once u get into college that stuff really doesnt matter anymore, even your college GPA isnt all that not that u should blow it off, but related work experience is alot more important. Lenticular_J
YES. Work experience is SO important. My brother in law is an engineer for Exxon now, and he only had a 3.1 GPA at Tech. But, he worked at oil fields every chance he could. Weekends, summer, whatever. Now he makes 80 grand a year. His best friend had a solid 4.0 all four years, but he threw himself into his studies too hard, and now makes 70 grand a year, plus he says he doesn't like the engineering they have him do. Work experience is a big thing. Of course, if you do something like communications, having a strong portfolio is probably more important. But whatever. I plan on having fun during college. I'm taking as many dual-credit courses as I can in high school. That much less money I'd have to spend. catch it now so you can like it before it went so mainstream

Danqazmlp
University/college looks like its so fun, i'm off next year but i've already had experience of uni parties from having a few nights out with people i know who are already at uni. One thing i've been told is to now worry too much about the first year, have fun the first year and then start to get down to working hard in the last half/two thirds of your course. Anybody else going through the whole sudent loan stuff in the UK? Its SO confusing, can't they just say you need x loan, apply for it here... Instead of maybe you want this, or you might need this, but then you will also need this to accompany it..argh give it to me straight damnit. Today i had to phone up student finance and found out i had put one thing wrong in my application which had labelled me as not being able to have a loan, one single thing messed it up, but they didn't bother telling me, i had to phone them to find it out, after waiting about a month for them to get in contact with me i now have to re-do my whole application for the laon. :wall: Want to be my friend?
