I used This tutorial for learning how to do this.

So, realism aside (because I know this is a pretty unrealistic landscape) what do you guy's think? I'm not sure if it can compare to my terragen work yet, but I have a lot more power in 3D studio max to do what I want. Trees, buildings, whatever are all within my reach now.

Blender: Free open source program

3D studio max: $5,000 (or so) program used by professionals in the industry.

:)

Ah I see.

^ and you paid how much?

Looks good though. Looks real, but just with a camera that takes little worse quality pictures. The crack how ever, looks real bad. Its to black, tone it down a bit

Yeah the shadow is bugging the crap out of me too. I think I can actually tone it down, have photoshop closed atm though so too lazy to. D:

I'm still pretty new to render settings and such in 3DSM, so I think next time I can get a higher quality render.

Well, I think the UI is a lot better, but I never really used blender.

Seems pretty blurry, TBH, but I really like the landscape. Looks real cool. Could do with much better lighting though.

Yeah I'm trying to figure out how to emulate a real sun, this scene just has a spot light pointing to it so not so great in that regard. :)

I'll be sure to turn AA up to next render so it isn't blurry.

Wow, that's really cool. Does the program use layers like PS? So would you be able to get rid of it all together?

It doesn't really use layers, at least not in the way Photoshop does. If it does use them it is for purely organizational purposes.

I assume you are asking if I could get rid of the use of photoshop all together and technically, yeah, I could. I could probably get a decent result with better lighting and such. However photoshop really helps to get a more favorable result if the product is just going to be a still image.

Of course 3DSM is very much able to stand alone and look great too.

Anyways I'm thinking I may try and learn the Unreal engine (UT3's map editor) because it allows for communication with 3D Studio max. It would be great to work on my own map at an artistic level. :)

Is that a joke?

Also I just realized I can use height maps with 3DSM probably. I used to use them all the time in Terragen as a base for the terrain, because they are incredibly realistic and are a great starting point. Now I just need to learn the ins and outs of the material editor.

That line down the middle is really distracting. I can't even tell what it is, my best guess would be a shadow. Other than that it looks great!

Yeah it's a shadow, from a mountain or object in the back there no doubt.

LOL. Blender is a free program, 3DSM is a £5000 3d program. It's also the industry standard for 3D design.

What I would say to back up Blender is that it can compete with C4D, 3DSM, Lightwave, etc. and actually does. Contrary to what you might think at first, Blender is even bigger in terms of community and development than GIMP.

Just because something is free doesn't mean it is worst... That is what everybody thinks about, money. Agreed with dsavi. Also, so gimp is worse than PS with what your saying... GIMP can open PSDs and Use PS brushes. Can PS open XCFs and Use GIMP brushes. Blender is a widely used program that can make models, movies, games, and more. Blender Corp. have made around 2-4 movies and 1 game.

EDIT... why are the quotes not working?

It is the Blender Foundation... not corp.

And I do not see the reasoning behind arguing about how much something costs... If I drove a taxi all day would it matter how much the car costs as long as it runs? Would it not matter more on pure driving skill rather than that I was driving a Toyota over a a Lexus? Sure one my have a nice title or look to it, but either way all you are doing it carrying people from one place to another.

It does not matter what software you use... all that matters is that you are able to use it.

I am sure that most professionals do not chose to use 3DS Max just because it is the industry standard. They pick it because that is what they know best and that is what they were trained to use. Some parts of this could be because Blender is relatively new.

There is nothing that can not be created in any standard (basic modeling, rendering, animation, ect.) 3D software that could not have, about as easily, been made in another.

Software does not make art (well I guess random generators, or presets...but that is not the point.) it is based on the skill of the individual that creates it.

[/rant]

Anyways, this is a very nice semi-starter piece. It is a nice example of the procedural capabilities of max. The main thing that I do not like about it is the resolution... mainly because it takes out so much of the detail, but I assume you did that for a sig.

The way that it rendered looks like it has depth of field turned on... Although I think that it because of all the detail showing in the middle but not the edges.

The lighting is odd based off of the moon in the sky but I guess that is the unrealistic part you were talking about.

Did you do any gamma corrections on this? Right now it seems to be very 2 value. Could you possibly bring out some of the middle values to give some more detail to it? Maybe a little lamp here. Then some inverse lamps there...

And that is all about I have to say.

Trespasser's Will Be Shot, Survivors Will be Shot Again.....And bam! We Got One!

Alright, sure GIMP might be comparable to photoshop, but that's only ~$800. We're talking about $5,000 here. Big big difference.
